My failure in incomplete

Aug 22, 2012 07:52

I may have failed as a writer. I may be a nothing editor. I may be the owner of a teensy press that rarely/almost-never gets reviews in the spec fic world.

But I did tell a new novelist that her book would land her a girlfriend. And I was right. So, for someone, I was a cupid. And some days I have to take joy in that.

That's awesome!

But you're definitely not a nothing writer or editor. Your press turns out consistently excellent books, every single one of which is something to be truly proud of.

Now the question is: will the novelist's relationship with her girlfriend last as long as the novel is in print, or vice versa? Will the relationship gain some five-star reviews? My late mother was a chaplain with the local Unitarian Fellowship, which meant she could perform weddings. Not all her couples stayed together long, but she didn't blame herself and neither did anyone else. Re your press and your writing, there is buzz about it even here in an English Dep't in a Canadian university largely unknown to the outside world. (My cute, young, gay, talented colleague admires you, & I think he's single, but I don't predict relationships myself.) :)

Well, I will keep my fingers crossed that the relationship blossoms. I should send you her book. Yes, I think I shall do that. Does your colleague have any requests besides making me blush at the thought.

Sorry this reply is so late! He didn't mention any requests to me, but he has written a series of fantasy novels for Ace under his real name, Jes Battis. I've ordered the first one, Night Child, from Amazon dirt-cheap. He says he is considering including openly-gay characters in his fiction, which sounds to me like progress. :)

Is there even a way to "fail" as a writer if you keep writing?

I love your work, both the stories you've written and the collections you've edited. PLUS, if not for following you on Twitter, I wouldn't have known about The German, which I just finished and holy shit, so good.
