Hmm... I'm not sure I cared much for France either. Overall, I thought it was a boring final game. That's what happens when it's all European teams in the finals I suppose. As for Zidane, regardless of whatever silly racist stuff that the Italian player was spewing, it's clearly an overreaction on Zidane's part. I'd imagine that kind of taunting is pretty common, no? Seems like it's all part of the game. I was really hoping for a Cinderella story like Trinidad/Tobago or at least for a team I cared about (US/Spain) to do better.
I think the diving and fouling adds an interesting element to the game in some ways. Certain teams (Italy & Portugal) use it too often, but it kind of reminds me of playing Spades and the strategic reneguing.
But certainly I saw too many games go to PKs or even worse such as when the team that clearly was outplayed won because they got a stupid goal somehow.
