> Oddly enough, the scale I have keeps telling me I'm at 17-19% body fat. Fresh out of the shower I'm clocking in at 16%.
If it's the kind of scale I think it is, it measures resistance up one leg and down the other. When you're skin's damp it conducts better, thus the resistance is less, and it says you have less fat. Annoying.
It is, in fact, the capacitance test scale! I know that the percent changes based on how conductive I happen to be at any given time. I'm just curious now if it's accurate or not.
I don't know a lot about exercise stuff... maybe you can help me? I am trying to get more active too but I think I have sort of the opposite focus. I've built up a bit muscle already from karate stuffs (mostly in the legs), but my main objective now is to lose some more volume and firm up the midsection a bit. Is the answer to begin a routine of daily cardio? Should I do some weights too? Which ones? I don't want to be a super muscle woman though. I just want to be a bit smaller. ^^;
I don't have a fancy scale either. The one at the Y only gives me the weight. How important is it to monitor the other stuff?
For me, my first and primary goal was to get rid of fat. Unfortunately, the most efficient means of doing this is to put the body in a state of ketosis. There is a lot of work out there conducted by the NIH and Johns Hopkins that shows that on a 6-12 month basis, monitored ketosis can significantly cut down on the amount of body fat a person has - but there's obviously a downside to things. Being in a state of ketosis (as far as I know) necessitates putting yourself in a catabolic state. Catabolism isn't super fantastic when you're trying to shed the fat because your body is breaking down your own muscle in order to get building blocks for glycolysis. That means unless you're getting a stellar amount of protein, you're going to be eating your own muscle as you go
( ... )
I am not sure if a ketonic program is right for me... I have heard negative things about it too. I definitely need to investigate things further before I try something like that.
Also: Do you eat any fresh fruit or veggies or do you just get everything from the vitamins?
I still eat plenty of fruits and veggies. In fact, if anything, I eat an enormous amount of vegetable matter. I don't count leafy greens towards the carb amount at all, but I tend to stick to less sugary fruits. Ketonic diets aren't for everyone. There is a pretty good risk of getting gout if you're careless and other ill effects if you're not paying attention and seeing the doctor on a regular basis. I go in for blood tests every 2 months just to keep tabs on my uric acid serum content levels since that is the primary indicator for gout.
bear in mind that eating carbs on the weekends effectively bumps you out of ketosis and any catabolic state as you flood your system with insulin instead of glucagon. This also makes building muscle easy since insulin is what's required for that sort of thing - but if you're keeping things in moderation you probably won't build that much and do more toning instead.
