I'm glad you're writing here. I like to read what you write. As for the burning shins, sounds like you might have shin splints. Maybe an hour of walking from zero is a little much? Also, shoes are important. (Enough of my lecturing.)
I hope that your pessimism doesn't become a self fulfilling prophecy. Maybe you can find a part time kind of stringer gig with a local newspaper or ad circular thingee to get some "clips" in writing and work your way into that biz in some capacity. (Eek. I will stop now. I always hated it when well meaning people like my mother offered me suggestions for living.)
