To the men who move only in dimly-lit halls and determine my future for me

Running Stuffs. In which I am very happy with my time in the Calgary Marathon. And post a couple videos for y’all.

Last Sunday was the 50th Calgary Marathon.

My chip time was
4:02:56. That makes it 54 seconds off my best time ever (4:02:02 at last year’s Vancouver Marathon).

But this is actually super good news, because of course the Vancouver Marathon is at, y’know, sea level. And Calgary about 1km higher in the air. This beat my previous best time in Calgary by about 10 minutes and I WILL TAKE THAT!!

Hell, if I hadn’t had to stop for a bathroom break (so often my curse! sigh) at the 13km mark, I might very well have finally smashed my ever-elusive 4h target!

Was a very warm and sunny day and I didn’t drink enough so I was super dehydrated at the end. Threw back a couple litres of water. That was a mistake. It... didn’t stay down very long. Puking water: fun! (Not.)

Continued to feel queasy so found an isolated corner with a patch of grass and laid down to relax a bit.

Woke up 4 hours later in the middle of a thunderstorm, being rained on. *Ahem*

At least my stomach was settled. The nap did the trick.

Ramadhan is in less than a month so no more full marathons for a while. I’ve registered to do one in Drumheller in September, and have my eye on the PEI Marathon at Thanksgiving. I’ve never been to PEI so am looking forward to it.

In the meantime, will be doing the
Millarville Half next weekend (as I have for the last several years). Despite last year’s
self-admonition to the contrary, I think I am just going to bike out again. And then will regret it and hate myself. Whatevs.

The following weekend (and the last weekend before Ramadhan) is the
K-100 Kananaskis Relay Race. The current plan is for me to run legs 4 and 5: 31.7km with a total elevation gain of just over 750m. I sure hope I don’t let the team down!

I was going to run the K-100 last year as well, but then the race got pre-empted by
the floods which came less than 36 hours before it was to start and that was, as they say, that.

I’m obviously hoping things will unfold differently this year.

Some vines for you:

And we're off!

Halfway there! Go go go!
(Sorry, this one’s sometimes a bit gimpy. Happens when you try to upload videos in the middle of a race by using public wi-fi access points as you run past them. Strangely enough.)

And it's allll over except for the eatin' (and the hurtin'). A finisher is me!
