"art"

Feb 04, 2003 00:32

Maybe I'm paying for my nighttime funtime romp in the snow in Saturday's wee hours, because now I'm sick. Oh well... I'm glad I did that while I still could, since it's warmed up considerably (now it's raining) and I don't think I'll be playing on the river any more. The ice sculptures have collapsed. Looks dangerous. So much for the MLive/WCBN ( Read more... )

I like the drawings, but what are 'ATCs'? And it sounds like you already have good ideas in mind...

ATCs are "artist trading cards". You can put any image you want on them, in any media, as long as you stay in a 2.5" x 3.5" format (size of a baseball card). Anyone can play! Some of the ones I've come across are absolutely God-awful, but a couple people have sent me ones I'm really fond of. I couldn't find it, but I have a collaged one with snippets of medical text and a tequila worm... hopefully I haven't lost it.

Truth be told I'm not particularly keen on the "trading" part, but doing these has kept me drawing... it's gotten difficult for me to maintain the energy and focus to do proper "art," and it was seriously depressing me (still is). With these, I can set aside an hour or two and create something small. If it turns out badly, I don't feel like I've wasted a big chunk of time, and it keeps me in the habit of drawing anything, anything at all. Having gone for months without even picking up a pen or pencil, I'm finally back to fiddling with something every other day or so. Keeping momentum's hard, you know?

I like that idea! Except for the meeting in person part. I doubt I'd be any good at that. But there are no groups here in NYC anyway! I've been thinking of doing some similar mail-artish projects, just sending things to people... And I know what you mean-- I went to school for *illustration* and have hardly drawn anything in ages. I did just start drawing again, recently, with some good results, but that momentum is so hard to keep...

reminds me of Louis Wain's insana-cats. Supercool. I'd like to see a snail w/glowing trail, glorified Krishna-style.

Louis Wain!!! I'm sure I've seen his work on postcards or decorative tins, but mostly I've seen him in books on the art of the mentally ill. Thanks for the comparison! When I do my exit interview for the study I was in, I'll need to bring my portfolio of kaleidoscope cats and keep a straight face the whole time.

ideas for ATCs cherdt February 4 2003, 11:13:52 UTC
Here are some ideas I'd like to see:
- a shrunken head getting squeezed by a giant hand.
- a scantily-clad pixie looking, puzzled, at an emaciated man on a torture rack.
- a very small person trapped in a plate of generously smothered chili fries.
- a rural farmer puzzled by a peculiar fossil he finds while overturning soil with a spade.
- a smiling anthropomorphic porcupine invitingly offering a glass pop bottle.
