summary: Jonghyun hates Kibum. Kibum hates Jonghyun. It's as simple as that...or maybe not.

an: i cannot believe i wrote this beast of a shinee fic. this is the first fic i managed to finish in months, and the longest in i don't even know how long. but i kind of like it and had fun. blame my friend who spammed me with jongkey gifs for the past three months and then gave me the prompt "hate you, love you" and i'm like ughh, fine, i'll give it a shot. and then this beast was born. i'm not used to writing about other fandoms, so i hope it's not too ooc. but enjoy!

Kim Jonghyun doesn’t hate a lot of things, though he doesn’t particularly like a lot of things either. Sure, he likes music and his mom and his best friend Jinki, but not much else. He dislikes homework and chores and that nasty white film you get at the bottom of a glass after a cup of milk, but he can’t really say he hates anything. A strong dislike of something, sure. But hate? No.

Well, that wasn’t exactly true. He did hate one thing… or person he should say.

If there was one thing Kim Jonghyun hated it would have to be the one and only Kim Kibum.

Jonghyun had hated him from the first day they met in 2nd grade. Kibum was just too prissy and bratty and worst of all he called the raptor picture Jonghyun drew for their teacher stupid! Kim Jonghyun’s raptor picture was not stupid. If anything was stupid it was Kibum’s girly face! And he made sure to tell Kibum this at recess which resulted in a black eye and a busted lip between the two of them.

So yep, he hated Kim Kibum.

Even now, almost ten years later he still couldn’t stand him. Jonghyun was sitting in his 1st period class, one head phone on as he half listened to what their teacher was drowning on about as she wrote on the board. He supposed he should be taking notes, but then he glanced at Jinki working diligently by his side and he figured he could copy them later. This new Wheesung song, however, couldn’t wait.

But then he strode in, ten minutes late as usual as he coolly walked in with what could only be described as a strut and slid into the seat in front of Jonghyun with the grace of a cat as if he’d been there all along. Jonghyun found his eyebrow twitch irritably and glared at the back of the other boys head as swiftly started pulling out supplies for their class. Kibum suddenly twisted in his seat and turned to him, mouth agape as if he was about to say something. Then he glared narrowly instead when he saw who it was and turned to his best friend instead.

“Jinki-hyung,” Kibum whined like some sort of lazy, affectionate kitten and smiled sweetly at the older boy. Jonghyun almost threw up a little in his mouth. “Do you have a pencil I could borrow?”

Jonghyun turned to his best friend, hoping he would do the right thing and tell him to fuck off and die. But Jinki had smiled his wide, pleasant, eye crinkling smile and Jonghyun felt kind of betrayed.

“Sure, Kibum-ah!’ His best friend said as he reached into his pencil case and pulled out a pink troll-toped pencil and handed it to the other boy. Kibum’s eyes had sparkled as he inspected the writing utensil.

“Aww, it’s so cute!” He practically squealed.

Jinki smiled at him, “Really? You can have it if you want.”

“For real?” Kibum asked happily and Jonghyun felt killing someone. “Thanks!”

“Yah,” Jonghyun suddenly interrupted angrily. “How about you come to school prepared instead of mooching off my best friend?”

Kibum’s smile vanished suddenly and he looked at Jonghyun with dark, narrow eyes. “You’re one to talk, slacker. So how about you shut the hell up and grow an inch or two?”

“Y-Yah!“ Jonghyun shouted in shock as Kibum only smirked and turned back around in his seat.

“Kim Jonghyun! Is there something you wish to share with the rest of the class?” His teacher’s voice scolded loudly from the front of the room.

Jonghyun sunk low in his seat as the rest of the class snickered. “No, Mrs. Lee.”

“Good, now I expect you to keep your outbursts to yourself.”

“Yes, Mrs. Lee,” Jonghyun said pitifully as the teacher only glanced at Kibum quizzically for a moment before brushing it off. Jonghyun grumbled something under his breath and Jinki patted his shoulder sympathetically before going back to his notes. Jonghyun just went back to glaring daggers at the back of the other boys head for the rest of the period.

That’s how the bell rung an hour and a half later and Jonghyun watch-- glared as Kibum swiftly packed up his supplies and left the class room without sparring Jonghyun another glance. He grit his teeth. That boy just pissed him off so much! If the other boy wasn’t so scrawny he would have been kicked his ass! But then Jinki would be upset with him an wait-- speaking of Jinki…

“You!” Jonghyun shouted as he stood from his seat quickly just as the older boy pulled his book bag over his shoulder.

“Me?” Jinki ask surprised by the sudden outburst.

“Yes, you! How could you?” Jonghyun pointed at Jinki angrily.

“How could I what?” Jinki asked.

“You know very well what. Stop spoiling that awful boy! He’s like a stray dog; if you feed him then he’ll never go away!”

Jinki sighed exasperatedly when he finally realized what the other boy was talking about. “Oh come on, Jonghyun. I was hardly spoiling him. I have tons of extra pencils! I could have spared one.” Jinki explained as he walked out of the classroom and into the busy hall without waiting for the other to follow.

Jonghyun followed him down the hall anyway and stopped when they reached Jinki’s locker. “That’s not the point Jinki! You know how I feel about him. He’s like the incarnation evil in purple patent leather skinnies! He‘s like… he‘s like Him.” Jonghyun exclaimed.

Jinki’s mind immediately tried to remember if Kibum had ever worn purple patent leather skinnies, but then realized he wouldn’t be surprised and got back to the question at hand. “Who’s Him?”

“Him!” Jonghyun exclaimed. “You know… HIM!”

Jinki only continued to stare at him. You know that placating kind of stare that looks as if they’re trying to understand but really thinking about if they should have you committed.

Yeah, that kind of stare.

“Oh, come on, Jinki. Him! From the Powerpuff Girls? You know that really effeminate, flamboyant devil guy with the thigh high boots and lobster claws!” Jonghyun exclaimed with exaggerated arm movements as if that was supposed to signify something more than him just looking like a fool.

“Right…” Jinki said lamely as he replaced some books in his locker. “I don’t think Kibum wears thigh high boots or lobster claws though.”

Jonghyun just stared. “You totally missed the point of that whole comparison.” He said disbelievingly. “The point is he’s an evil little bitch boy and I forbid you from associating with him!”

Jinki sputtered in shock, “B-but I-- wait! I’m older than you! You can’t forbid me from associating with anyone! And besides, Kibum’s really not that bad.”

Jonghyun scoffed, “Not that bad to you, maybe. He actually pretends to be a decent human being around you. But you’ve seen how he treats me! He’s evil!”

Jinki sighed and shut his locker. “You don’t teat him much better, Jonghyun.”

“Yeah, well… he’s evil!” Jonghyun finished lamely.

Jinki only rolled his eyes fondly. “See you after school, Jjong.”

The next morning Kibum was at school bright and early for the first time in what felt like years. He had woken up an hour earlier than his alarm clock and decided to just start getting ready then. Kibum can’t leave his house until his hair was impeccably styled, with kohl lining his eyes and after changing his outfit at least four to five times. It wasn’t easy looking this good.

Kibum smiled as he reached his locker and opened the door to the mirror inside. He fiddled with his caramel colored fringe and touched up his eyes and smiled to himself. He did look damn good today, if he dare say so himself. There was at least fifteen more minutes until the first bell and he adjusted his gray vest and smoothed down his shirt.

“Oh, Kibum-ah! Good morning!” He heard as he looked over and saw Lee Jinki come over and lean against the locker beside his own. Kibum smiled pleasantly. He liked Jinki. He was nice and loyal and smart but one of the reasons why he couldn’t stand Kim Jonghyun. He just couldn’t understand why someone like him could have such a nice and loyal friend like Jinki. It wasn’t fair. Sure, Kibum was popular and had tons of friends, but he’d rather have one good friend like Jinki instead of a hundred friendly acquaintances.

“Morning, Jinki,” Kibum smiled as he started putting books in his locker.

“You look good today, but I’m surprised to actually see you on time for once.” Jinki said, chuckling.

“Well it takes time to look this good,” Kibum smirked. “I don’t just wake up looking this amazing.”

Then, as if on cue, in stumbled Kim Jonghyun tiredly rubbing his eyes. He looked as if he just rolled out of bed, his hair disheveled and wearing a pair of grey sweats hanging low on his hips and a sleeveless white tee. Kibum inwardly seethed. Apparently some people do, though.

He redirected his gaze from the effortlessly handsome young man and frowned as he continued to organize his locker. Reason number two why he couldn’t stand Kim Jonghyun. He tried to ignore him as the other boy made his way over to them lazily and dropped his chin tiredly on Jinki’s shoulder and closed his eyes. Kibum bit his cheek.

“Long night of video games?” Jinki asked, smiling fondly down at his friend.

“Hmm,” Jonghyun hummed tiredly, eyes still closed. “Wanna come over tonight and help me with my homework?”

Kibum watched out the corner of his eye as Jinki agreed and patted his tired friends head soothingly. He seethed with jealously for a moment, only wishing he had a friend he could do that with without feeling awkward. Jonghyun’s eyes suddenly snapped open as Kibum threw a book into his locker a little harder than he had intended. He tried to ignore the way Jonghyun looked him up and down for a moment before frowning.

“Oh, Kibum is that you? I almost didn’t recognize you with a book in your hand.” Jonghyun said as he stood up straight and ignored Jinki’s plea to shut up.

Kibum rolled his eyes before glaring back at the other boy. That was an empty jibe because they all knew Kibum was very studious, even if he was late to school 99% of the time. “Oh, Jonghyun is that you?” Kibum said with mock surprise. “I almost didn’t recognize you at eye level!”

Jonghyun narrowed his brown eyes and stuck out his tongue childishly.

“Come on, Jonghyun. Lets get ready for class. You still have to go to your locker, right?” Jinki asked almost pleadingly as he tried to pull Jonghyun away. Jonghyun nodded and turned on his heel and headed down the hall, but not before giving Kibum one last dirty look. Jinki immediately followed after him and turned to shout goodbye over his shoulder.

“Later, Kibummie! See you in class!” He yelled happily as if the whole tension between him and his best friend never happened.

Kibum smiled back and waved before turning back to his locker and sighing. His day had started out so good, too.

Later that night Jinki and Jonghyun sat in his bedroom going over their homework for tomorrow. Jinki swiveled back and forth on Jonghyun’s desk chair as Jonghyun lay on his bed, tossing a nerf ball into the air. His mind was no where near their arithmetic homework.

“Hey, what did you get for number eight?”

“ARGHHHHHH!!!”

“Hm… that’s odd. I got XY over seven.” Jinki said curiously as he tapped his chin with his pencil.

Jonghyun rolled over on his stomach and glared at his oblivious best friend. “Jinki, I’m upset!”

Jinki sighed as he removed his glasses and placed them on the desk with his homework before swiveling around and staring at his best friend. “And what seems to be the problem this time?”

“What’s the problem?! Kibum’s the problem!” Jonghyun shouted. Jinki rolled his eyes. Of course it was Kibum. When is it ever not about Kibum anymore?

“He was just so… so… infuriating today!” Jonghyun exclaimed into his pillow.

“Today? When do you not find him infuriating?” Jinki asked.

Jonghyun sighed and rolled onto his back, head hanging off the edge of the bed as he stared at Jinki upside down. “I don’t know. He was just… extra infuriating today for some reason. I mean, did you see the way he glared at me this morning?”

“Well you did insult his intelligence.” Jinki added helpfully.

“Well he was asking for it! Standing there all… all pretty and almighty or something…”

“Pretty?”

“And did you see how hard he bumped into me in the hallway later?” Jonghyun continued as if he never heard. “And then he had the nerve to sit with us at lunch as if he owned the place… And  you, what’s with you suddenly calling him ‘Kibummie’? I don’t think I like how close you too are getting. I don’t want some of his bitch to rub off on you. You… you don’t like him, do you?”

Jinki’s eyes widened. “What? Like… like him, like him?”

Jonghyun nodded nervously.

“No! N-Not like that! I mean I like him but not like… like that.” Jinki explained. He saw Jonghyun sigh quietly in relief. “But I think I know someone who might,” he added quietly as an afterthought.

Jonghyun rolled back over on his stomach and narrowed his eyes at his best friend. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

Jinki shrugged nonchalantly. “I don’t know. I just kind of get the feeling you may like him a bit more than you’re willing to admit?”

“WHAT?! That’s crazy talk, Jinki. I don’t… there’s no way! I hate his guts!” Jonghyun exclaimed looking completely and utterly scandalized.

“You hardly even know him. Maybe if you’d give him a chance you’d realize he’s not that bad. And plus, you did just call him pretty.” Jinki said slyly.

Jonghyun’s eyes widened. “I did not! I mean, well… he’s so girly looking, of course he’s pretty! But I mean, he’s not really pretty, just pretty in the way that he’s… pretty. I don’t really think he’s pretty, he just… is, you know?”

“Riiight,” Jinki nodded and ignored Jonghyun’s glare. “All I’m saying is maybe you should give him a chance. Ask him on a date, or something. He’s really not that bad once you get to know him.”

“Ughhh!” Jonghyun shouted into his pillow once more. “The mere thought of that makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth.”

“Does it really?” Jinki asked.

“…No. But still! It’s weird! I mean… I don’t like him!” Jonghyun shouted again.

“Oh, come on. What do you have to loose?”

“My dignity, my self respect, my IMAGE,” he explained sullenly.

Jinki sighed, “You have none of that anyway.”

Jonghyun grumbled into his pillow again before throwing a mini temper tantrum on his bed; complete with kicking and screaming. Jinki rolled his eyes.

“You know what? Fine,” Jonghyun said suddenly as he sat up on his bed, cross legged and staring at Jinki determinedly.

“Fine?” Jinki asked.

“I’ll ask Kibum on a date. But only to show you I’m not afraid, and that I don’t like him! It’s not like he’ll say yes anyway…” Jonghyun grumbled.

“Don’t take no for an answer,” Jinki supplied happily with a smile. “Even if you don’t like him, how would it look for you to be turned down by Kibum?” He finished slyly.

Jonghyun glared, “Oh… you play dirty.”

Kibum was early for school the next day again. He was beginning to try and make it a habit since it turned out so well yesterday. Well, at least until someone showed up. Kibum sighed as he opened his locker and did his daily routine of fixing his hair and makeup. He hated how that other boy always managed to get him so worked up. Usually when something annoyed him or bothered him he’d brush it off without a second thought. Petty things like that were completely beneath Kim Kibum. But no, he couldn’t just brush Jonghyun off. He was just too irritating to ignore and he hated him for that.

Jonghyun was effortlessly good looking, effortlessly talented, and had great and loyal friends. He was everything Kibum wasn’t. Not to say that Kibum wasn’t good looking, or talented or had great friends, but he had to work his ass off for all of it. Everything just seemed to come to the other boy without even trying. It wasn’t fair. Kibum huffed irritable as he began putting books into his locker and arranging them for the day.

He was so preoccupied with his task that he didn’t even notice the other boy’s presence until he heard and obnoxiously loud cough. Kibum glanced over and raised an eyebrow as he saw Kim Jonghyun leaning against the locker beside his, arms crossed over his chest and a determined look in his eyes. Feeling a little bit threatened, he looked around for Jinki for support but saw no sign of him.

“Um, yeah?” Kibum asked almost nervously.

Jonghyun suddenly averted his eyes and shifted his stance a little bit as he looked at the spot next to Kibum’s shoes almost shyly. Kibum raised an eyebrow curiously at the boys sudden demure behavior. He had never seen him act like this before and it was making him feel shy.

“Uhh, are you… busy Saturday?” Jonghyun suddenly asked nervously, his hand coming up to scratch the back of his head in an awkward gesture.

Kibum just stared at him oddly for a moment. “Um, huh?” He replied dumbly.

Jonghyun sighed and dropped his arms and stared back at Kibum seriously. “I’m asking if you’re busy this Saturday.”

Kibum eyed him suspiciously for a long moment. “Why?”

Jonghyun groaned in frustration as he ran his hands through his hair a few times making it look even messier than before. Kibum frowned slightly at that fact that it still looked good. “Just because… I was wondering… if maybe you’d… wannahangoutorsomething.” Jonghyun mumbled quickly as if it was almost painful for him to say.

“What?” Kibum asked.

Jonghyun was beginning to look progressively more frustrated by the second. He groaned again before sighing and looking back a Kibum, that same determined look in his eyes as he had before. “Look,” he began seriously. “I’m asking you out on a date this Saturday, simple as that. And just so you know, I won’t take no for an answer.”

Kibum stared at him for a long moment. “…What?”

“Damn it, Kibum! Don‘t make me say it again!”

Kibum blinked a few times, “A-Are you seriously… asking me out on a date, Jonghyun?”

“Yes,” was the others simple and direct reply.

“…Are you high?”

Jonghyun groaned again but this time it was more of an angry growl and slammed his first against the locker. Kibum jumped, startled out of his reverie and glared at the other boy. “You’re not going to make this easy, are you?”

Kibum only stared.

“Look, Jinki just seems to have this strange idea in his head that we’re only mean to each other because we may secretly like one another.” Kibum scrunched his nose in disgust. “I’m only asking you out to prove to him that no, there’s no type of hidden feelings and I honestly just can’t stand you. It’s really as simple as that.”

Kibum glared. “Wow, what a charmer you are.”

“Ugh, just say yes, damn it!”

“No.”

“Oh, come on! People would kill to be in your position! What do you have to loose?”

“First of all, people have killed to be in yours. And second of all, what do I have to loose? Hm, how about my dignity, my self respect, my IMAGE? I do have standards.”

Jonghyun narrowed his eyes and chose not to mention how he said the exact same thing last night. “Just one date, Kibum. Just to prove Jinki wrong. It’s not like it means anything!”

Kibum sighed and leaned against the side of his locker as he considered it for a moment. He fiddled with his hair and looked back up at Jonghyun starring at him anxiously. It couldn’t be that bad, could it? If they could be cordial to each other for at least a day, then it would be fine. Kibum had seen the way Jonghyun was with other people and would begrudgingly admit that he did look kind of fun to hang out with. So, maybe he’d give it a shot. Worst case scenario; they’d just end up hating each other more. No real big loss there.

“I’m waiting, Kibum.” Jonghyun suddenly interrupted his thoughts with an annoyed look.

Kibum sighed and closed his eyes “Fine,” he said finally.

“Really?” Jonghyun asked.

Kibum rolled his eyes in exasperation. “Yes, Jonghyun.”

Jonghyun suddenly began to look shy again. “Um, okay then. I… guess I’ll see you Saturday.”

“You’ll see me in ten minute when we’re in class.” Kibum said with a smirk.

“Ugh, whatever! I’ll pick you up at seven!”

“Fine.”

“FINE!”

Jonghyun turned around with a huff and began to stalk away irritably. Kibum watched him go before the other boy stopped and looked back over his shoulder with a smirk. Kibum eyed him suspiciously. “…And wear something pretty.”

Kibum’s face reddened like a tomato. “G-Go fuck yourself, you perv!”

Jonghyun only smirked again and sauntered away. Kibum narrowed his eyes and huffed in irritation as he began throwing more books in his locker.

What the hell did he get himself into?

“What the hell did I get myself into?” Jonghyun groaned as he observed his fifth outfit in the mirror that Saturday evening.

“Oh, come on. It’s not that bad,” Jinki smiled up at him reassuringly from his bed. Jonghyun rolled his eyes and pulled off his current shirt and reached for another.

“Yes it is that bad! Why did I have to say this Saturday. I’m not mentally prepared for this!” Jonghyun shouted as he observed the new outfit next.

“You just need to relax,” Jinki said pleasantly. “You’re acting as if this is your first date, or something.”

Jonghyun didn’t reply and began to studiously examine his clothes on the floor.

“This… isn’t really your first date, is it?

Still nothing.

“Oh. My. God… that is SO cute!” Jinki practically squealed as he stood up from the bed and pulled out his phone. “I have to tell Taemin… no wait, Minho!” He giggled manically as he began punching the keys on his phone vigorously.

“What?! NO!” Jonghyun shouted as he tackled the older boy to the bed and wrestled the device away from Jinki’s squirming hands. “This is no joke, Jinki! I’m having a panic attack here!”

The older boy finally began to calm down and wiped the tears that gathered in his eyes from laughing so hard and stared up at his fidgety friend. “Come on, Jjong. What’s the worst that could happen?”

“We could kill each other,” Jonghyun said matter of factly as he sullenly fiddle with Jinki’s phone.

“Hm, I could see how that would be problematic for future dates.” Jinki said, nodding.

“This isn’t a date! It’s a… it’s a farce! And there won’t be anymore farces in the future…ever!”

Jinki grinned. “Well there won’t be if you keep straddling me like this. Wouldn’t want Kibum to get the wrong idea about us.” He said slyly.

Jonghyun groaned and rolled off the other boy and went back to inspecting himself in the mirror. Jinki sat up and smiled at him again.

“Well, you’re certainly getting worked up over what to wear to this farce.” Jinki said.

“I just want to show Kibum he’s not the only one that can dress well and look nice.” Jonghyun explained as he adjusted the collar of his shirt.

“So you think he looks nice,” Jinki grinned.

Jonghyun glared at him through the mirror. “Stop putting words in my mouth and help me!”

Jinki sighed and stood back up from the bed and examined the clothes strewed around the already messy room. He smiled when he found something appropriate. He picked it up and tossed it to Jonghyun, who caught it deftly before it his face. “Wear something sleeveless. You have nice biceps.” Jinki grinned.

Jonghyun eyed the new attire and shrugged before beginning to change.

“And you should change quickly,” Jinki said. “It’s a little past 6:30.”

“WHAT?!”

By the time Jonghyun reached Kibum’s doorstep it was one minute before seven. Luckily Kibum didn’t live too far away, but he did have to power walk to get here on time because he knew Kibum would complain if he were even a second late. He’s surprised he even remembered where the other boy lived, it had been almost two years since he’s last been here. They had to do a class project together freshman year. It didn’t really end well. Jonghyun cringed inwardly at the memory before bringing his hand up and ringing the doorbell.

He waited for a few moments before he heard foots steps jogging to the door. Jonghyun self consciously adjusted his clothes and hair before the door swung open. His eyes widened slightly as he took in Kibum’s appearance. He would have to begrudgingly admit he didn’t look half bad when he dressed down a bit. But frowned when he realized the other blatantly tried not to dress up, but still managed to look good. His makeup was light, only hints of kohl lining his dark eyes as his hair fell over his face evenly. He wore some type of over sized white shirt that hung low on his wrists and in the collar revealing the strap of the white wife beater underneath. He wore dark,  form fitting skinnies that tucked into a pair of black combat boots, and yes, this was dressing down for Kibum.

Jonghyun smiled toothily. “I see you’ve toned down your obnoxiously flamboyant wardrobe.” He said sweetly because he didn’t really know if he was ready to compliment the other boy yet.

Kibum only smiled at him with mock sweetness. “I see you’ve toned up your blatantly obvious shoe lifts.”  He said because he didn’t want to admit Jonghyun actually looked really good himself.

Jonghyun rolled his eyes. “Whatever, are you ready?”

Kibum nodded before gabbing a bag and throwing it over his shoulder and heading out to walk beside Jonghyun. They walked down the street towards town as an awkward silence began to settle over the two. Jonghyun shoved his hands in his pockets and chewed on his lower lip and Kibum nervously adjusted his shit collar and bag strap every few minutes.

“So…” Kibum began awkwardly. “Where are we going?”

Jonghyun suddenly froze in his tracks and stared ahead wide eyed. Kibum stopped and looked back at the other boy curiously.

“I, uh… didn’t really think this through.” Jonghyun said awkwardly.

Kibum looked at the other boy in shock, mouth agape in disbelief. “You really asked me out on a date without any sort of plan?”

“Look, it wasn’t exactly my idea to do this! It’s not like it means anything anyway, so I thought we could just wing it! Besides, it’s more romantic this way!” Jonghyun tried to explain, waving his arms in the air frantically as if to wave away some of the doubt.

Kibum only continued to stare at Jonghyun’s panic stricken face a long moment before busting out in hysterical laughter. He doubled over as his body heaved with amusement, hitting his thighs as he wiped at the tears rimming his eyes. Jonghyun began to feel a little bit offended.

“Hey, what’s so funny?!” Jonghyun suddenly shouted, feeling more and more embarrassed.

“You, Jonghyun,” Kibum began, hiccupping with laughter. He looked back up at the other boy, eyes sparkling in amusement. “You… are something else…” he said before beginning to laugh again. Jonghyun bit his lip to hide his smile. Kibum’s laughter was a bit infectious.

Things actually seemed to progress a lot less awkwardly from there. They reached the town and started to browse some of the boutiques, trying on funky sunglasses and hats and Jonghyun had begun to realize their insults towards each other were beginning to get less hurtful, and more playful and how Kibum had a tendency to act really sweetly when he’s comfortable without even realizing it.

He noticed how Kibum sometimes absently fixes Jonghyun’s hair for him when it gets out of place, or how he delicately touches his shoulder or back whenever he had to lead their way through a thick crowed just to let him know he was still there. It was easy to tell Kibum was beginning to get more comfortable with the whole situation, and they were both beginning to actually have a pretty good time.

Once they left one of the boutiques where Jonghyun bought a new pair of sunglasses, and Kibum a new scarf, the sun was beginning to set. Jonghyun turned to the other boy as he finished folding his new scarf and delicately placed it in his bag.

“Hey, want to head to the pier and grab something to eat?” Jonghyun asked. Kibum looked up at him and then over to the pier in the distance. They both knew that the pier was like the biggest date spot in town, but chose not to bring it up.

“Sure,” Kibum said. “I could use something to eat.”

They reached their destination in no time and sat together on the ledge of the pier overlooking the beach with a plat of fries between them. They hadn’t said much else to each other since they left the shop and now they sat quietly sharing a plate of French fries and it wasn’t the least bit awkward anymore.

Jonghyun smiled as he noticed Kibum pick up a particularly crunchy looking fry and tossed it to his side of the plate, knowing it was Jonghyun’s favorite. “You know,” Jonghyun began. “You’re not really as much of a bitch as I once thought. I mean, you’re still kind of a bitch, just not as much as I thought before.”

Kibum looked up at him and smiled. It was an honest, amused smile and he shook his head. “And you’re not as much of a jackass as I once thought. Though, you’re still a bit of a jackass.”

Jonghyun grinned, “Thanks, that means a lot coming from a bitch.”

Kibum smiled again and shook his head at he placed another fry in his mouth. Jonghyun followed and looked back out at the setting sun. “Hey, do you remember why we really hate each other?” he asked suddenly out of the blue.

Kibum looked up at him with a raised eyebrow and then shrugged. “I don’t know. I just remember not liking you from the very beginning.” He explained absently as he tossed another fry in his mouth.

“I didn’t like you either.” Jonghyun grumbled. “You called my raptor picture stupid in 2nd grade…”

Kibum’s eyes widened as he suddenly burst into laughter again. “You actually remember that? That’s so cute!” He giggled.

Jonghyun blushed lightly. “Shut up! I only remember because I knew for a fact that my raptor picture was awesome.”

“That was a raptor?” Kibum laughed again. “I thought it was a bunny rabbit!”

“Hey, shut up! It was awesome! You were clearly just jealous of it.” Jonghyun grumbled again as Kibum continued to laugh.

“Yeah, totally jealous of your bunny raptor scribble,” he began sarcastically. “I also remember you calling my girly face stupid and I punched you in the eye.”

“Yeah, and then I punched you in the lip. Those were simpler times…”

Kibum rolled his eyes. “Hey, I have an idea.” He said suddenly as he licked and lips and brushed the salt on his fingers against his pants. “Let’s each try and think of three things we like about each other. We’ll go back and forth.”

“Why?” Jonghyun asked, surprised by Kibum’s sudden enthusiasm to show praise.

“It’ll be a fun! I never really thought anything good about you before and I’m curious of what I can come up with.”

It was Jonghyun’s turn to roll his eyes. “Fine, but… you go first. I’m going to need more time to think.”

Kibum scoffed. “Gee, thanks,” he said as he stared at Jonghyun curiously for a few moments before he suddenly snapped in realization. “Oh, I know! I like how you sing.” He said as he ate another fry, feeling accomplished.

Jonghyun smirked and rolled his eyes good naturedly. “Wow, nice job there. Everyone likes my voice, though.”

Kibum rolled his eyes. “Oh, and let’s not forget about your impeccable modesty either.” He said sarcastically. “You’re turn.”

Jonghyun stared at him for a long, calculating moment as if he was actually putting a lot of thought into it, and then suddenly; “I like your shoes.”

“Wow, I see you put a lot of effort into that one.” Kibum said boredly and then stared at Jonghyun for a long moment. “You’re eyes are brown.”

Jonghyun raised an eyebrow. “Thank you, Captain Obvious.”

“You’re welcome, Sergeant Sarcasm,” Kibum said. “But really, they’re a nice shade of brown. I like them.”

“Oh,” Jonghyun said, feeling suddenly embarrassed. “Um, thanks…” He looked down between them and watched absently as Kibum’s fingers toyed with a ketchup packet. “You have nice hands,” he said suddenly, not really meaning to say it out loud. Kibum looked up at him surprised but he finished anyway. “You have really long, elegant fingers. My hands are actually pretty small.”

Kibum looked down at their hands to compare, and noticed it was true. “Yeah, but your hands are manlier. Mine’s are so feminine. I hate that about myself.”

Jonghyun just looked up at him surprised. “Really?” He asked.

“Yeah,” Kibum replied. “Why do you sound so surprised?”

“I don’t know. You always just seemed so… proud of your prettiness.” Jonghyun explained as he played with a burnt French fry at the edge of their plate.

Kibum’s eyes widened. “You think I’m pretty?”

“What? No! That’s not what I meant! I mean you’re just so… you know, naturally like that. I don’t really think it… and… you know, yeah.” He finished lamely. “Who’s turn is it?”

Kibum smiled, “Mine. And I think you’re actually kind of cute when you’re all fail like that. I like it.”

Jonghyun blushed and rolled his eyes. “Whatever… I like your hair. Game over.”

Kibum only laughed and threw a French fry at him.

They finished off their plate of fries in a comfortable silence until Kibum looked over as the sun was half way set on the horizon. “Hey, lets go down to the beach,” he said with a smile.

Jonghyun shrugged and they both stood to head down from the pier. They sat side by side on the sand as they quietly watched the sun set into the horizon. The sky was painted in oranges, and pinks, and deep purples all meshed together in a plethora of other gorgeous colors on the horizon. It all seemed a little too romantic for the two of them to share together, but they didn’t seem to mind.

“Hey,” Jonghyun suddenly called, not taking his eyes off the horizon. “Did you mean what you said earlier?”

“Mean what that I said earlier?” Kibum asked curiously.

“About you liking my singing.” Jonghyun said.

“Oh,” Kibum turned back to the sunset. “Yeah, I meant it.”

“In middle school, you said you hated it.”

Kibum chuckled. “You certainly remember every little indiscretion I’ve said to you over the years. But I was young back then… I--” Was jealous. He thought. “I don’t hate it anymore.” He said instead. “It kind of reminds me of a mix between Michael Jackson and Ne-Yo.”

“Really? You think so?” Jonghyun turned to him excitedly. “Michael Jackson was like my idol!”

Kibum smiled, “Mine too. I actually cried my eyes out when he died.” He said, chuckling.

Jonghyun smiled. “I sang a Ne-Yo song for that talent show freshman year. You remember that?”

Kibum nodded. “You sounded good. Do you know his song Mad? I think your voice would really suit that song well, though.”

Jonghyun was beginning to feel awkward with all this praise from the other boy. “I don’t think I’ve heard that one.” He said honestly and watched as Kibum reached into his bag and pulled out his pink mp3 player without another word. He placed one headphone in his ear and the other in Jonghyun’s and Jonghyun moved closer to the other as Kibum skimmed through his play list until he found it and pressed play.

The music filtered through their ears and Kibum brought his legs up to his chest and rested a cheek against his knee and closed his eyes. Jonghyun couldn’t help but watch him as he quietly mouthed the lyrics and the colors of the sunset reflecting off his skin as his long eyelashes fluttered against his cheek. It was kind of beautiful and he bit his lip and turned away as the song ended and Kibum opened his eyes.

“You like it?” Kibum asked with an earnest smile.

Jonghyun nodded, though he really couldn’t remember it. “Yeah, it sounded good. I‘ll have to learn it.”

Kibum’s smile widened and Jonghyun was finding it harder to look at him. “Make sure you let me know when you do. I wanna hear it!”

Jonghyun nodded lamely, still not looking at the other boy. “It’s getting pretty late and cold. We should probably start heading back.”

If he were looking at the other boy, he may have noticed the flash of disappointment that crossed the other boy’s face before he smiled and said, “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

They stood up and brushed the sand from their pants and started their way back to their neighborhood.

It didn’t take long until the two reached Kibum’s doorstep, and by that time the sun had completely set and the first batch of stars had begun to dot the night sky.

Kibum turned to him in the light of the porch light and smiled cheekily. “Wow, I had no idea you were such a gentleman and would walk me all the way to me door.”

Jonghyun smirked, “Well, you know me. I’d never leave a girl such as yourself to wander off alone.”

Kibum rolled his eyes but smiled anyway. ‘If I’m the girl, then I’d suspect a man such as yourself would be trying to invite his way into my house by now.”

“Me? Never. I’m a respectable man.” Jonghyun grinned.

“Well that’s good to know because I don’t put out on the first date.” Kibum grinned back, mischievously. “But… I wouldn’t be averse to goodnight kiss.” He said coyly as he slowly approached the other boy.

Jonghyun couldn’t move, only stare hopelessly as Kibum approached until he was only centimeters away from his lips. Jonghyun’s heart pounded in his chest and he licked his lips self consciously as Kibum breath tickled his mouth. They stayed like this for what felt like and eternity, until he saw Kibum glance up at his half lidded eyes and step away shyly. Jonghyun had to fight the instinct to follow him with his lips and his eyes snapped open as he looked at Kibum curiously.

“What?” Jonghyun asked, only because he didn’t know what else to say in this situation.

Kibum bit his lip and looked up at him shyly. “Don’t you think it’s weird?”

“Think what’s weird?" Jonghyun asked quickly. His lips tingled from their almost kiss and he was beginning to feel irritated.

“That 24 hours ago we hated each other, and now we’re almost kissing on my doorstep!”

Jonghyun sighed and rubbed his hand through his hair in frustration as he took a step toward the other boy without looking up at him.

“What’s weird is that I actually had a good time today, when I thought we’d end up killing each other. What’s weird is that instead of thinking you’re obnoxious and bitchy, I actually think you’re kind of cute and funny. What’s weird is that despite all that, I can’t bring myself to care at this point if it‘s weird, and really… when has anything about our relationship ever been normal?” Jonghyun looked up into Kibum’s wide eyes and grinned. “So just shut the hell up and kiss me you bitch.”

Kibum guffawed loudly with sparking eyes. “Jackass,” he muttered before he threw his arms around the other boys neck and crushed their lips together. Jonghyun hummed and smirked into the kiss as he wrapped his arms tightly around Kibum’s slim waist and pulled him close. They both laughed awkwardly into each others mouths at the absurdity of it all but they didn’t seem to mind with the way they didn’t let go.

Kibum chuckled one more time with his bottom lip between the other boys teeth and he pulled back slightly and smiled. “This… is absolutely unbelievable.” He said and laughed again at Jonghyun’s cheeky grin.

“I know, my kisses are unbelievably amazing, right?”

Kibum rolled his eyes. “You… really are something else, Kim Jonghyun.”

Jonghyun only grinned again and pecked Kibum once more on the lips.

“Bitch,” he mumbled.

“Midget,” Kibum replied.

“Fuck you.”

“Perhaps some other time.” He smiled mischievously as he pried his way from the other boy’s grip around his waist with a sly smile. Jonghyun flushed and sputtered a few incoherencies before Kibum rolled his eyes and kissed the corner of his mouth quickly before backing away to the door.

“I guess I’ll see you around, then.” He said almost shyly as he pushed the door opened and disappeared inside.

Jonghyun stared at the doorway dazedly for a moment. “Yeah, definitely, definitely around.” He mumbled to no one in particular. “And definitely, definitely soon.” He said as he finally managed to turn away and head home.

On his way back he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket and he pulled it out. It was a message from Jinki.

how was your first farce~?
    -jinki

Jonghyun rolled his eyes and typed his message back.

i hate it when you’re right
    -Jjong

He shut his phone and stuffed it back into his pocket. It was only a moment later that I vibrated again. Jonghyun pulled it back out and looked at the screen.

then you must hate me all the time ^^

    -jinki

Jonghyun’s eyes widened as he quickly tried to type his reply.

what did you say?????
    -Jjong

He shuffled his feet as he bit his lip nervously and waited for a reply. It only took a few more moments for his phone to vibrate in his pocket again. He pulled it out quickly, but frowned at the unknown number. He flipped open his phone and read the message anyway.

awww i was ur first date?
you must feel like such a big boy now ^^
    -kibum♥

Jonghyun flushed hotly and typed his reply forcefully.

bitch♥
    -Jjong

He may not hate Kibum anymore, but he was still an insufferable little bitch sometimes. But now, it was actually kind of sexy. He saved the number to his phone and smiled. Kim Kibum was his bitch now.

End.
