@kiwisc: I was interpreting that biologically, in that all (non-genetically-modified) biological organisms are genetically designed to reproduce. I base this on the following stanza, where the biological order ("sperm swims for the egg," an organic, unconscious process) is juxtaposed with the social order ("the finger for the ring," a conscious, social process). I think the correlation of the two within a discourse of inevitability is what is so disturbing to me. Regret becomes the bringing to consciousness of the two orders, biological and social, and their harmonies and disharmonies
