SCORR (Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation)

Well, about time for one of those updates. This weekend was pretty bomb. I went to Biola for a conference on racial reconciliation, and it was really cool. Friday night we attended this amazing worship night with a contemporary worship band, a polynesian one and then a gospel choir, so moving. There was this great speaker to, Brenda Salter McNeil, she was so passionate I loved it. She had an analogy about how we are all like puzzle pieces, and we all add to complete the puzzle. Some people may think that certain pieces are more important than others (like the corners, or the ones with something on them) but in reality, if you put a puzzle together and just one piece is missing, it sucks, it's not finished, it's not complete, your eye is constantly drawn to that hole. She talked about how Jesus Christ can change our personal puzzle piece to puzzle peace, so that every different race can be in unity. I'm definitely not explaining it as well as her, but I'm sure you get the idea. On Saturday we had options of different workshops, I did one on what I have to bring to the table being white, and what role I play in racial reconciliation. What barriers need to be broken down, what stupid questions will be asked, a lot of really clever things, he has a book called Being White I want to read. He also brought up what is white American culture, which is something I couldn't really answer, and something was brought up that maybe it's because I experience it constantly every day, so I can't. After that I went to another workshop and learned an African dance! It was sooo fun, and I pushed myself in something new, and could definitely see the differences in culture through the movements of the dance. Afterwards we (being me and my friends Jameisha and Vanessa) ditched one of the events and went to Cue! A place Stacey had told me about, and took pictures, I'll put them on Facebook/MySpace sometime, though I gave it up for Lent, so for sure not until Sunday. On the way back we had a discussion about the weekend and it was cool to get a lot of different view points. In our car we had me, the mixed typical white girl that doesn't have a super strong sense of heritage, a black girl, an Italian woman and a half Filipino half English woman, a lot of different sources to get perspective from, very eye opening.

On a more fun note, on Sunday I played ultimate frisbee, I did pretty ok, it was intimidating though because it was with a bunch of our school's athletes, I was the only non athlete there... ahh! After that Jameisha and I went exploring around our campus. Found a nice trail and from there found this cool tunnel with a bunch of graffiti artwork in it. We also found some abandoned houses. Today I actually worked out, surprising, no? I'm trying to make it a habit, we'll see....
