living here

I don't know who's here. This blog doesn't connect with my real name in any way that I'm aware of. I've decided to use it again as a pseudo-anonymous blog that is known about by people I know in real life and not connected in neon to my name. I haven't decided what to do with this blog exactly. Hello ( Read more... )

I use fortnight on a regular basis, it is quite a useful measurement of time. I THINK folks know what I mean (or else they are not listening or don't care). At least I don't get obvious blank looks and no questions thus far. I do get paid on a fortnightly basis.

I never heard fortnight, though, growing up in the mid-west. I adopted it from literature, I think.

I'm with JJ. I don't think I've ever heard an actual human being, in actual conversation, use the word "fortnight." It's always been in books or on TV. I guess, looking at this from the standard of laziness and the desire to conserve as much energy as possible (which is, of course, the position from which I look at everything), "two weeks" is just as easy to say as "fortnight," and has the added advantage of being understood by our less-literate fellow citizens.
I have never tried online dating, but I suppose I wouldn't, given how little I like real-life dating. But I hope it leads to lots of good stories. There haven't been enough of those.

Online dating is better. If you use the right site. It's different from dating because the people who contact you have been screened by algorithms and the people you see have also. It's like having a screen around you that hides you from people you wouldn't enjoy and having goggles on that hide them from you. And people you would enjoy and who would enjoy you become super-visible. I know it sounds cray-cray but that shit works, at least judging from the totally sane and interesting conversations I'm having. It's lovely.

I have a friend in Asheville who regularly uses on-line dating -- has done so for years. We have met a string of fellows she's dates, all of whom seemed lovely. We especially miss Will. I thought he'd be a keeper, but I think our friend is not really looking for a keeper. Anyway, it seems as if it WOULD work.

I'm here!

I didn't know you were back on the dating market. Looks like you and Diamond stayed friends, though-- I see his posts on your FB page.

I hope you find a nice gentleman. :)

I haven't been here for some time. We've not been in our own place since February 3rd until two nights ago (and now, sporadically), so I've used only the library computer which does not like Live Journal and sometimes doesn't like Facebook and seldom likes Blogger or any other place I go when i've got my own computer.

Fortnight is a good word. I don't think I've ever used it or heard it used. I would like "finenth" to come back into common usage. And "yonder". "Over there" doesn't have the same ring as "yonder", plus yonder can be said in different ways to imply distance. Finenth (near) is even better. My Grandma Hall regularly used the words "yonder" and "finenth". She used the word, "abhor" as well. And "abide", as in "The old man can't abide football."
