My whole family scaled back on the spending this year and there was no less enjoyment of the gifts or the whole holiday than in years past. It's time to stop the madness. If you have a small fortune and can afford expensive gifts, that's great. But most people cannot and going into debt to buy someone a gift they probably don't even want is insane and certainly not part of any religious tradition I know of(unless American consumerism and debt-culture are considered a religion now).
