As someone who has been diagnosed with depression I've had a lot of trouble with this (mostly inner) conflict: am I depressed/broken/needing pills, or am I a sad person, or am I a PERSON who is in sad situations and has difficulty coping with them? Depression's danger is keeping us down and out. If you don't let that happen, you take back the control.
(Plus, it helps in my own struggle to know someone else is struggling too, because then we see progress in the other that we don't see in ourselves but can know it is there, mirrored).
