I have got to expand my repetoire. When I sing Dot to sleep I have my choice: nursery rhymes or angry chick rock. They're the only two genres where I know all the words.

Poor baby probably doesn't need to grow up being rocked to sleep with her mama singing "Nothing Compares 2 U" or the entire catalogues of Poe and Liz Phair.

I had the same problem until Z started watching Jack's Big Music show. I had a habit of singing Ani Difranco (Untoucable Face and Gravel) and Bjork (I Miss You) to him. JBMS was a gateway show to current kids' music scene and I started listening to Laurie Berkner. Some decent musicians also have kids' albums: They Might Be Giants, Bare Naked Ladies, Lisa Loeb, etc. There are also a some cool compilation albums like For the Kids, For the Kids, Too, Mary Had a Little Amp, Phildelphia Chickens, Dog Train, Blue Moo, etc.

Oh, Little Miss Dot has heard more than her fair share of Mama warbling out Pink Floyd tunes.

Rob's been singing "Close your eyes, go to sleep, or the zombies will eat you..."

And Pink Floyd.

Momma loves her baby
And daddy loves you too.
And the sea may look warm to you babe
And the sky may look blue
But ooooh Baby
Ooooh baby blue
Oooooh babe.

If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice.

Exactly! This song is one of the reasons I had to start questioning what I was doing to her psyche. I've sung it to her many, many times.

At this age, lyrics are not so important. It's the emotional content in your voice when you sing that will help her bond with you and develop cognitive skills. So whatever comes out of the feelings you have for her is ok. I'm sure my future babies will get to hear lots of Joni Mitchell and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

That being said, it's always nice to expand one's repertoire. And there will come a point where you are worried about her repeating things you say (or sing). So on that front, there are so many good kids albums out now -- way more than when we were kids. BNL and TMBG both have kids' albums that are great. Also, folk music, ala the 1960s, is great. Think Pete Seeger, etc. Bruce Springsteen put out a great album called "The Seeger Sessions" that I love.
