What if the Leviathans made a copy of Castiel just before the explosion?

1. The Leviathans plan to use him later
   1. They know that he is important to all sides
      1. He’s with the Winchesters - Of course
      2. He is a traitor to most of Heaven and taking him out would be a feather in the cap of WHOEVER is in charge there now - Terrible pun intended
      3. Naturally, he and Crowley are not on the best of terms (Or are they)
      4. He is the perfect poster boy for world domination - Hello Misha!
   2. By keeping him alive, but restrained (In a non=pron way) they are keeping him out of the game
      1. As stated before he is important to all sides
      2. He has been specifically brought back like three times now. Many other angels were not even brought back once.

 
Other possibilities:

1. The Leviathans made a copy and the real Cas was left unconscious and seriously injured - maybe human - by the lake - It could possibly have been an unintended move:
   1. Crowley finds him and nurses him back to health (I’m really partial to this one, but I don’t think it will ever happen *Demands Fanfic*)
      1. They’re a team. Damn it! UST FOR ALL!
      2. Crowley understands that the Big Bads inside of Cas made him go off the rails
      3. It would be a lovely “Frak you” to Dick
      4. *Swoon* Sorry, that was just my reaction to this possibility
   2. He is human - or an angel -and has amnesia
      1. The writers messed everything up so bad with Sam that you know they want another crack at it
      2. We could see the accidental discovery of grace and that could be epic
      3. We see that no matter what happens, he and Dean still have a profound bond
2. He’s gone - Maybe in the ether or maybe gone-gone (Stay with me)
   1. They use the grace that is stored in the handprint on Dean’s arm to bring him back (I will explode)
   2. We see a meeting between Cas and God - Where he makes the case for humanity and not himself. Then he is brought back to save those he loves, because he has proven himself virtuous and worthy *sobs*
