Apparently, the old version was directed by a guy called Mel Stuart: http://imdb.com/title/tt0067992/
I am a big fan of the original, but I haven't read the book so I'm not sure how it compares. I hear Tim Burton's version is closer, apart from the bit at the end with Christopher Lee. I am also told that Roald Dahl himself was not happy with a single one of the filmed versions of his books made while he was alive.

yeah the old one is a bit to happy happy where as the book makes willy wonka out to be a bit more evil in a quiet way so I agree that the original isn't anything like the book. I don't hate it but I wouldn't buy it

yeh, the christopher lee stuff was added by tim burton, im sure that lots of purists who adore the book dont like it but i kinda do as is good to see where willy wonka's motivations have come from. i saw some stuff when the new version of cACF came out - Johhny Depp visited Roald Dahl's writing shed and met his wife and apparetnly he really didnt like children! haha, that makes it ironic that children love his creations :P

I've never really had an urge to read the book to be honest and I didn't really like the original version, I guess the reason it was made so happy and clappy was because it was made so long ago? Abit to sickly for my likings...

...Imagine my shear twisted delight when the new one came out! I was over joyed! It could just be me being abit wrong but I thought disturbed willy wonka was great!

Plus the film has chocolate in it - so it automatically gets my vote!! :op
