When we go to San Diego we stay in La Jolla because we like it and know it fairly well from numerous trips over the years. We rented a vrbo condo one year and the next year we hopped around to different hotels, and we've had a car both times. La Jolla is a small town, not that much to do, but there are some beaches there and restaurants/shops. Very pretty and tranquil and quintessential So Cal, IMO. I think you might want a car to go to different beaches, if you are beach people? But I am not very familiar with downtown SD, I've really only been to this aircraft carrier museum, I forget the name, and Old Town (lots of touristy Mexican restaurants), so no advice on the transit system and how well you can get around without a car. I love both the SD Zoo and Sea World! The zoo is enormous.

We always have our car and prefer to stay out of town as well. La Jolla is beautiful and Sea World is really pretty far from downtown SD.
We just bought that seires of books for a friend and are waiting until she is done so T can read them (they just did a big book exchange so she is reading some crazy girly books right now).
