Science and Spiritualism is not mutually exclusive... you can be one and the other at the same time... Maybe he just took it to the extreme, but still believed in it... I don't really know what you want me to discuss, because I haven't read all his books... but all I know is that being smart has nothing to do with excluding things, rather, the smarter you are the more you should be able to accept and take in... maybe not believe yourself, but accept that other people believe, and maybe that's what he did? Who knows? ;)

Mm, well, I've always believed that one sort of went with the other (but you already know that....we've discussed similar things before).

I don't think that the information was wrong. He probably did believe in spirituality-- most Scots do. Not sure why, but they do. Perhaps it has something to do with the brooding, enchanted land they live in... I've always thought there was something spiritual about Scotland. But that could just be my romantic side coming through.
If you want to ascribe his belief in spirituality to health issues, well, I do believe that he was not a very well man. So, I suppose that his illnesses could have had that effect on him.

I'm afraid, though, that you won't really get a satisfactory answer to this question. :L We'll never know for sure what he thought or why he thought it.
