Summary: VERY AU, where Kate stayed on the Island and there is no rescue, and the flashes don't end.
Someone once told her that time heals all wounds. Even dashed hopes. Even forgotten promises. Even broken hearts.
That person was her mother. And for once she told the truth.
She knew they’d all die eventually. They’d fall to the jungle floor, their red mortality dried into their skins, their eyes searching the skies for saviour.
So they walked.
It didn’t seem so stupid really, to set off without a destination and literally walk till you drop. Of all the dumb things she’d ever done, this barely compared. After, she’d spent a lifetime running, she could pace herself the final stretch.
They all dealt with the realization differently. Juliet cried for a life she used to have. Jin sunk inside himself, brooding and silent. Dan- well, he just carried on being Dan.
Sawyer was the only one who repented and she hates him for it.
The flashes broke the clear skies, shattered the silence, crashed her rebirth and tore it into little pieces.

And then there were two.
It seemed funny, or maybe kind of tragic, and all sorts of crazy. Being left with him. Them. Us. Dieing.
He told jokes, stupid ones that make her smile and frown at the same time. She’s angry at him always, and she can’t explain why. Somewhere in a past life he learnt how to run and they do it together. The weird, childish love affair that’ll stain her dieing memories.
“Kate Austin, I love you.”
He knows her inside out, he’s read her file and he’s made love to her on the jungle floor. He says it with a grin and a drunken wink, the blood from his nose still fresh. They find cheap Dharma beer by the crate-load and drown their sorrows until another flash takes it away. They sit round a campfire and she almost suggests playing I Never.
She kisses him. Because… she gave up trying to explain why a long time ago. She’s Kate Austin. She’s never heard of heartbreak.
“I love you, Miles Straume.”
The fire crackles into the deep night as they use each other for warmth, and hope they’ll both be dead buy morning.
