New Betta

I couldn't wait anymore.

I miss Lloyd terribly.  His tank sitting empty is just wrong.

I stopped at  Robbinsdale Farm Garden Pet Supply last night while doing several errands in that area.  I have been in there before and they have always had a dozen or so Bettas in stock.  Of course, I absolutely hate how they are displayed in this store.  The ( Read more... )

Would the ASPCA be able to do something for those fish? I'm appalled just hearing your description.

This comment reminds me! My husband knows a girl (via college) that used to work at the store and who is now involved in law enforcement in the area. She said that they get countless animal cruelty calls regarding that place.

It's extremely hard to get in trouble for such things, unfortunately.

I HATE THAT STORE. kitchenwitch January 25 2007, 17:45:18 UTC
When I first moved to Robbinsdale, I was very excited about that store. A non-corporate pet store! Full of things like exotic birds! Then, after visiting a few times, I discovered their back room full of puppies and kittens. Can you say "puppy mill"? Anyone who breeds and tries to sell mixes for $500 ought to be put in jail. Absolutely no proper dog breeder sells dogs in a pet store, and there were dozens of puppies (some quite old) back there, of all different breeds and at really high prices.

After buying a lovebird (not there) and reading more about parrots, I went back to visit their birds (this was before I found the puppies, actually). MOST of the birds are sick in some way, and the room they're in most of the time is not climate controlled to the degree that birds need. It's appalling.

I seriously want to protest the place.

Maybe a customer protest, letter-writing campaign or boycott is what it would take to change things.

Your new fish sounds cool. I love crowntails.

I get so mad when I see Bettas in stores and this situation really sounds even worse than normal. Gah!

I know what you mean about rescue. So tempting to rescue, but you don't want to encourage them to keep showing the fish as they do. I get torn but sometimes rescue anyway dangit. Talking to a manager is a good idea, though from the sound of other comments, it may be futile.

I just cleaned our fish Reddy's tank after being a bad fish owner and not doing so since maybe Thanksgiving. (Fortunately, it's a five gallon cycled and filtered tank and there's just the one betta so it's not like it was all that bad or anything, but I still felt guilty!) Reddy is this brilliant young red crowntail who zips around and his fins are always spread out nicely. Contrasts great with the green (fake) plants and background. Kinda Christmas-y.

we got both our cats there. I bet they would think about your concerns & may upgrade their display if you talk to the store owner: the trick is to talk to someone who cares: who's invested in the business & the community: that pet store's been around a long time but isn't a chain: ask to talk to the owner/store manger about the fish treatment/display. I'm certain they'll listen. Ifyou don't: I'll have to. Don't make me make a side trip of aggressive idealistic determination to roseville : don't do It: call em today & tell me who you talked to or I'm driving over after work tomorrow. REALLY. I'm going to be checkin' .
