Music is fine as long as it doesn't feel the need to be at full volume.

Actually, I wish more Flash games had the following controls:

Music on/off
Sound effects on/off
Music volume
Sound effects volume

Often it would be nice to play a game with my own music and the game's sounds but it's rarely possible.

I hate it if music is on by default, as I often have something else on in the background so it's annoying. An on/off option would be fine. My default reaction to any site which auto-plays music is to leave that site.

I like to listen to sound effects/music when I'm not listening to anything else, but since I often am watching something else at the same time, I get very annoyed with games where the music is always on and I can't mute it without muting the rest of my browser.

I prefer game music not to be too distracting from the game, and wordless unless the relevant to the game. I don't mind, for example, a song being sung if I'm playing a scene set in a nightclub where someone is supposed to be singing. Preferably not too repetitive sounding - just the same 3 bars plated over and over soon gets annoying, but it's ok if it's only a short piece played on a loop. I'm more bothered about sound effects rather than music; I can often play my own music, but can't sort out my own sound effects.
