As I recall, the Bible says not one word about abortion. I've never really understood how that one particular issue has taken hold so deeply in the minds of the religious right. There are so many other things they could climb on the soapbox about, and possibly get better agreement!
It's the quote from Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
Which draws a LOT of philosophical interpretation and personal opinion. God was talking to Jeremiah to boost his self esteem and ego, and help him go forth onto nations. Kinda like a pep talk. I don't think it was meant to be taken as an anti-abortion statement. I think God knows us all before this life and after. And even with birth control- trust me- if He wants someone born, He'll get someone born. Case in point- my oldest daughter 1of4= condoms. My next daughter, 2of4= birth control pills and condoms. My youngest daughter= rhythm method, birth control pills and condoms. My son= rhythm, pills, condoms AND sponge. Need I say more?
One shouldn't take the Bible literally. Even Jesus said to follow the heart of the law. Not the letter of the law. And the only people Jesus ever yelled at were the ones that fancied themselves experts on the word of God. Think about it.
