So, at the end of this week, I'm eligible to look for a new phone (sneaky 18 month rather than 12 month contract, you see) - but now I'm currently wondering what to go for

I'd steer away from the newer Nokia's atm. They look shiney but the N96 is going to have the same flakey bugs as the N95 had and is pretty bulky tbh. Samsung is just not worth the software hassles. I'd stick with S/E for what you want and are prepared to get on upgrade or a slightly older Nokia walkman phone. No matter what phone you get these days tho your going to have to live with the bulky headphones issue i think.
Myself i have a G1 because they are awesome.. apart from shite camera and battery life. But i can live with that for shiney apps and great internet.
The phone i would steer away from at all costs is an iphone. Apple are not being sued over it for nothing :P
Also bear in mind i only ever deal with these phones when they have a problem, so my opinion is highly bias. The phones i tend to deal the most with are Samsungs and N95/N96 and the w910i. (the last is easily sorted by a quick firmware update as soon as it's out of the box)
I also primarily use my phone as an mp3 player and text machine. I love my shiny, red SE w910i. It's not got a great camera (only 2MP, no zoom and no flash) but it's a great music player and can take up to an 8GB card. It does occassionally crash (as it switch itself off and run down the battery unless you take it out and restart the phone) but this seems to be mostly whilst on the train between Manchester and Bolton - I think my phone just hates commuting! Other than this though, it is a good phone for music/texting. Also, texting whilst listening to music does not adversely affect either feature.
Possibly there are better phones but I do not know them and hence recommend mine which I shall be keeping for as long as I can (thinking of switching to Pay As You Go when my contract is next up...)
