I'm not quite sure why some die-hard fans thought this was the worst Star Trek thing to ever exist.
I'm not quite sure either, because I mostly quite enjoyed it (aside from the Khan race issue and the gratuitous Carol Marcus stripping scene). However, I think people who were more into actual TOS than me (I got into it with the TOS novels and the movies and was never as into the actual show) felt like this movie goes against everything that Roddenberry was trying to imbue with his vision of the future? Or something? Especially with the revenge-y stuff, I think. I get that to a point, but I also think that the whole destruction of Vulcan thing has sort of changed things a teeny tiny bit, you know?
Combined with the fact that I think some felt like the twist on Wrath of Khan was contrived and not really earned since they didn't feel like Kirk and Spock had a strong enough relationship to make the scene truly meaningful. (I sobbed like a baby, so apparently it worked for me. :-))
I forgot about that! I think I'm too jaded by Game of Thrones and other things now for it to register much. XD

Ah. Well, it definitely did go dark, like the title said.

I sniffled a bit. And it felt to me that quite a bit had happened between the first and second movie, so I didn't really have a problem with their relationship being that close.
Woo! Going to buy this for my self as a belated birthday gift today. :D
Happy belated birthday!
Did you spot Mickey right at the beginning? He OWNED the first 10 minutes of the film. At least that's what I think, because, dude! Mickey!
Mickey! Mickey did a very bad thing.
I've heard two explanations as to why we got Cumber-Kahn instead of an actor of Indian heritage to play Kahn.
I've heard both of those as well, and it makes sense. At least other than the name, they didn't have any heritage/cultural stuff going on. They pretty much didn't even need the name other than it being a very recognizable figure from TOS. (And after seeing TOS Khan, I have absolutely no love for him or Montalban, so there's no indignation for me there.)
Oh, I was the only one who laughed hysterically at the KKAAHHNN reversal and the last 20-15 minutes of the movie was driving me batty as my brain was screaming "just use the damned blood!!"
I loved this movie so, so much, despite it's flaws. I thought some of the Spock/Kirk stuff felt a bit forced (then again, I was never a Spirk shipper) and could have used more Bones (why exactly was the CMO, who also happens to be the captain's best friend not called again? And, too, I'm a Bones girl...), but Benedict's performance totally made up for it!! And BAMF!Acting Captain Sulu too :-)
And a confession that may make me a terrible person: the Carol changing scene didn't bother me. Was it unnecessary? Yes. But it never threw me into fits of rage like it has done for other people.

It had lots of fun stuff in it! I always will want more Bones - he's hilarious! XD

It didn't even register with me when I was watching it. Whoops.

*nods* that he is - I absolutely love him, and Karl does such a good job playing him. I was reassured to learn the "enough with the metaphors" was a result of Karl complaining that that was essentially all his lines were. He's more than just the joke man. ;-)

That actually makes me feel A LOT better for not being bothered about it. XD

HI MICHELLE. Haven't seen this movie yet so nothing of real substance to add. Just thought I'd yell at you a bit. :) Oh! And I saw an ad the other day for Dachshund Pinot Grigio - hee.
I did like how big the Enterprise was. And the whole engine area. It was probably the most realistic of all the shows and movies as far as getting the sense of the guts of a massive machine.
That's one of the things I noticed and appreciated in the 2009 film, but it blew me away in this one (the Enterprise rising out of the ocean on Nibiru gives me chills every time). I realize it was probably emphasised to make the Vengeance seem more intimidating (at least in part), but it still completely impressed me!
