Your experience in painting mimics my own. Whenever I try to draw people* as attractive they turn out hideous and malformed. When I deliberately try to draw weird-looking people they either end up looking decent or mildly retarded.

*out of my imagination. You think I'm actually going to look at a model and sketch them out the way you're supposed to? Pshaw.
