wow uh i'm not sure why i haven't seen your photos before, but i do like them quite a bit, miss. oh yeah i'm john. duh. i don't think we've met before though, so hello =)
as for the cameras, i'm glad i could help a bit. the 20D/30D are wonderful, especially if you've invested in canon already (which i guess you have)
hi john! you probably have never seen my photos since i rarely took any up until just recently. in 2004 i was really into photography, but then i stopped. now the shutter bug has bitten me and i'm taking pictures once again. i recently started taking a basic photography night school course at a local collete to brush up on my knowledge of apertures/shutter speeds/lighting/lenses etc.
i use a Canon Powershot G3. nothing too fancy. i was able to borrow a Canon Rebel XT for a weekend which sparked my interest in getting myself a DSLR.
1. omgwtfbbq thx for sparing me from angryora rabbit. 2. yessir (ma'am) i'm a senior yayyyy 3. and the lenses! my opinions on the two that i think you are talking about:
18-135 3.5-5.6 sort of replacing the 18-70 for the mid-level dSLR kit lens. we had a copy of it in our store, and it's alright. good build quality for the price. the manual focus ring is really small and hard to use, but that might not be an issue for you. frankly, i'd spend a little more money and get the 18-200 VR. i know it's pretty much unavailable right now, but it's the ultimate everyday lens, and has le vibration reduction! if you can mind the distortion and slow aperture, i'd go for the 18-200 instead.
70-300 4.5-5.6 VR okay actually no real complaints on this one =). as it stands it's really a consumer zoom (big range but really really slow, aperture-wise) but it's the first in the mid-level zooms that features the VR. this one's definitely going to be a pretty popular lens, and for good reason.
For some reason I always thought that you were two years older than me... I guess I was wrong there. :P
I'm looking at the latter lens- it's on the expensive side, but I'm kind of in love with the idea of it, and your opinion pretty much solidified that. :)
if you mean the 70-300, it is DEFINITELY on the expensive side... i thought it was going to be less than $500 and just realized that it's going to retail for $699. to be honest i think that's a little ridiculous.
you can get fantastic, simliar used lenses in near-mint shape for about that price: the 80-200 with a constant 2.8 generally sells for around $625 used. it doesn't have VR and is significantly bigger, but the glass is higher quality. the 70-300 is definitely smaller, more compact, and has VR. but then its really pricey haha.
weigh the options. i hate how there are always trade-offs =(
hm i was thinking about digital SLRs, although i think it'll be sometime before i actually get one (or if i win the lottery, which i doubt will happen any time soon). but thanks for your reviews! :) i've been reading about them online but you know, those are kind of one sided in the sense that it's all like: "YAY FOR NIKON/CANON" but i guess that's because i'm reading directly off their sites. anyways: good luck in schoool! p.s: do you know if the nikon has continuous shooting like canon?
hahah yeah direct info from the companies' websites generally won't reveal their faults.
as for the continuous shooting (burst mode), every SLR has one. so yes, the nikon has continuous shooting, like canon.
nikon advertises that the new D80 shoots at about 3 FPS, but i seriously doubt it shoots this fast... it feels much more like 2.5 FPS. this could be because of the increase in file sizes (6MP to 10MP in the D80) or something else, but the marketed 3 FPS seems a little too high.
canon's XTi, on the other hand, definitely does shoot 3 FPS. and just for the record, canon's 20D, 30D, and nikon's D200 can shoot as high as 5 FPS.

I've been looking at the new telephoto lenses Nikon is letting out- definitely going to ask for one of those for the winter holidays.
Are you a senior?
