Into the Dark Night
Chapter 5

Sungmin held his breath as he trailed behind Kyuhyun, fisting the back of the younger’s shirt in attempt to calm his beating heart.
They crept along the corridors of their hideout, steps careful and calculated. The air felt different, a foreign scent lingering in the atmosphere.

“Who’s there?”

The question echoed through the walls, no reply in its wake.

Kyuhyun gulped soundlessly before walking on, intent on finding out who dare break into their home-all the while, acutely aware of the hand tugging the hem of his shirt. He smiled inwardly at Sungmin’s cuteness and made a mental note to tease him about it later.

“How cute.”

The two jerked at the sudden sound of an unknown voice from their right. Sungmin let out a yelp as they squinted in the dark.

There, right in front of Donghae’s door, stood a tall man clad in black leather. He wore a cloak that seemed to hide so many secrets, its compartments numerous and mysterious. Even with the amount of clothing he wore, Sungmin could still see that the man was fit. The dark fabric lined his toned muscles, creating a thin sheet of layer that did nothing to hide but compliment instead his evident masculinity.

For a moment, Sungmin found himself staring in awe. Kyuhyun scoffed and stood in front of him, blocking his view of the handsome stranger.

“What’s a Rife like you doing here?” he spoke bravely.

Sungmin looked at him, then at the stranger, with wide eyes. A Rife?

His eyes darted to Donghae’s bedroom.

The man raised an eyebrow, and chuckled. “You’re a clever one.”

“Answer the question.”

He laughed at that. “Feisty too. Relax. I’m just…” He took slow steps toward them, a slow smile creeping on his face. “…looking for something. You might have it.”

They stiffened at his words.

“Leave. We have nothing.”

“Is that so?” He smirked, “Then you wouldn’t mind if I looked around for a bit?”

Sungmin gulped, eyes darting once more to Donghae’s bedroom door. The Rife stood dangerously close to it.

They both knew they stood no chance against a Rife. They were too fast, too strong, too cunning. Nothing stood in their way when they had a mission to accomplish. Resistance would only make things worse, and they both knew they had to stay alive. For Donghae’s sake.

Kyuhyun drew a shaky breath, “Do what you want.”

The man wasted no time as he quickly turned to the door nearest him. Sungmin choked on air, his grip on Kyuhyun’s shirt tightening as the Rife entered Donghae’s room.

To his surprise, the smirk on the man’s face slowly disappeared as his eyes roamed from corner to corner of the small room.

Empty.

Kyuhyun and Sungmin shared a look, smiles tugging at their lips. For once, they were glad that Donghae had this terrible-troublesome-habit of escaping their hideout every time he felt bored.

Thank God.

The Rife, on the other hand, frowned deeply. He had been so sure he’d find the Solis here, and his calculations were almost never wrong.

“Well?” Kyuhyun looked at him smugly, “Done looking around?”

The man turned around, his face still set into a frown. “Yes. I’ll take my leave.”

Sungmin made shooing motions as they watched the stranger leave so quickly that they had a hard time believing he was even there.

That is, until he suddenly reappeared with a mischievous glint in his eye. “Siwon. My name is Siwon.” He turned around and shot them a look. “Remember that.”

And then, he was gone, leaving the two to stare into the darkness with fear and bated breath.

Hyukjae had been roaming the streets aimlessly for days now. He’d checked everywhere under the rain, every nook and cranny, every convenience store, every park, every single shop remotely associated with cats, everywhere-and still no sign of his fair-skinned target. Either his skills were getting rusty (and he highly doubted that) or Kim Heechul was just as witty as his records say.

Now, Hyukjae was never one to cuss out of frustration on a mission (he always, always succeeded), but after days of playing blind cat and mouse with this guy, he can’t help but let out a string of curses under his breath as he stomped down the sidewalk.

That was when he recognized a painfully familiar head of warm brown hair, tucked away in one alley.

Hyukjae took a double take, almost tripping over his own feet once memories of that short encounter in the forest rushed in and he realized that no, he wasn’t hallucinating this time. This was the real deal.

And so, reminding himself over and over again of his duty, the Rife merely watched the brunette quietly, only noticing then that the boy was not alone. Three burly-looking men surrounded him.

“This is a pretty one.”

“I saw him first!”

“Are you lost, boy?”

Donghae could only look at the three strangers with wide eyes, not quite knowing what to do. Kyuhyun and Sungmin had clearly told him to stay away from civilians, but he was in such a hurry trying to escape earlier on (he was so sure he heard footsteps coming up to his door) that he forgot his cloak.

Naturally, it wasn’t long until he attracted attention.

So, he did the next thing he remembered the duo telling him: keep his mouth shut.

“C’mon, we won’t bite.” They took a step forward. He stepped back.

Hyukjae furrowed his eyebrows.

“You really are a piece of art.”

“They’ve been searching for Lumici like you, y’know.” They were getting closer.

Hyukjae clenched his fists.

“We’ll keep you a secret though, won’t tell the police. We can just…” Donghae could almost feel the man’s breath fanning his face. “…go to my house and play.”

One of them raised a hand and cupped his face, his thumb tracing patterns along the smooth skin of his cheek. Donghae shivered under the touch, using all his strength to try not to whimper.

“You’ll be my new toy.”

That was the last straw.

In a flash of red and black and pale skin, two of the men were simultaneously knocked to the ground, everything happening too fast for either to react. Their leader had his arm bent painfully behind him, a voice growling into his ear.

“Don’t.” Hyukjae tightened his hold on the man’s wrist, “Touch. Him.”

He knocked him unconscious, went over to the other two who were still trying to get their bearings, lightly tapped a spot on their necks and they blacked out as well. He moved with elegance, experience and grace.

Donghae watched, with wide eyes and parted lips, as the sole person who had occupied his thoughts for the past week stood before him. He craned his neck and stared at the redhead, trying his best to memorize the contours of his jawline and plump lips, the very face he’d so longed to see once more. He hadn’t even known how he ended up sitting on the floor.

Hyukjae stared back at the brunette, his breath hitching at the sight before him. Time and memory had not served him well, blurring the image of how his soft brown hair fell over his eyes and framed his face perfectly, and his eyes sparkling with innocence.

“Th-thank you.”

“Are you alright?”

They spoke at the same time and Donghae was about to let out a giggle when he felt his eyes glaze over as the familiar feeling of sleep swept through him.

So tired…

Hyukjae was quick to catch the Lumici as he fell into slumber, confusion racking his thoughts not because of the Lumiciant’s sudden desire to take a nap but because of his own actions.

He gazed at the sleeping-boy? man? He wasn’t sure-in his arms.

What am I doing?

His thumping heart beat with the pitter-patter of the raindrops.

Donghae woke up to the smell of strawberries and rain. Nuzzling his face deeper into the scent, he realized it was actually a head of hair and toned skin.

“Good morning.”

His eyes snapped open at the familiar voice. Only then did he notice that the he was being carried on the redheaded stranger’s back, his face buried in the crook of his neck.

“Wh-what...?”

“I couldn’t just leave you there.”

“…Oh.” Donghae replied dumbly. “I fell asleep again, didn’t I?” He mumbled mostly to himself, unconsciously snuggling into the back of his unnamed savior.

Hyukjae stiffened a fraction at the feeling of warm breath running down his neck and the faint ringing of bells that seemed to resonate from the mere sound of the brunette’s voice. He stopped walking.

After a few moments of processing silence, Donghae let out a yelp and got off Hyukjae’s back.

“Sorry! I didn’t mean to use you as my car or something! Sungmin hyung told me to never leech off of other people and here I am, treating you like my personal servant!” the words came in a ramble from Donghae’s mouth, a happy grin tugging at his lips as he walked around to face Hyukjae.

The redhead could only stare, a bit shocked at the sudden display of energy.

“Thanks for saving me.” His grin turned into a mere smile, “I was…really scared back there.”

Donghae looked at his hands. They were shaking.

It took all of Hyukjae’s energy not to hug him then and there.

Instead he replied with a Be careful next time and turned to leave, believing that now that the brunette was awake, he’d done enough for the day. He’d already wasted so much time, and ‘missions don’t accomplish themselves’.

Although, his peace and quiet was short-lived. It wasn’t long until the brunette caught up to him with excited footsteps that splashed on water puddles in their wake.

“My name’s Donghae! What’s yours?”

Silence.

“Can we be friends? Let’s be friends!”

More silence.

“Sungmin and Kyuhyun hyung almost never let me out, so I don’t have any.”

He didn’t even know why Donghae kept talking.

“I like your hair. You have very nice hair.” Donghae nodded in self-agreement, seemingly unbothered with having a one-man conversation.

Hyukjae sent him a mere sideway glance, but continued on walking.

“Where are we going?”

We?

“I am looking for something.” He finally replied, emphasizing his first word.

Donghae grinned, at least now he was getting a response.

“I can help!” He grabbed Hyukjae’s wrist and dragged him to wherever his two feet would take him.

Hyukjae didn’t think much of it though. All he could think of was the warm hand on his and the sound of tinkling laughter.

Donghae.

He liked the way it sounded.

They’ve been travelling on foot through the forest for days now. Kibum was never a man of complaints-the language of the unable and weak, or so he says-but he had to admit, he was nearing the edge.

He didn’t blame himself though; any person who travelled with Shindong for more than a span of four days without an infinite amount of food supply and no vehicle would lose their minds one way or another. It was bathroom break this, ‘I’m sure I saw a ramen shop there!’ that, and he was 95% positive the guy was a sleeping log with the amount of time it takes to wake him up in the morning.

“Kibum-ah! I see light! That means…food!” and Shindong was off.

Kibum felt his eye twitch.

He sighed and bent to pick up their bags and dragged his feet in the direction his partner ran off to. As much as the big guy was a pain in the ass, Shindong was vital for his plans. Kibum was certain he couldn’t do the job alone, and besides, if someone were used to his mannerisms by now, it would be him.

Just as he was about to shout a ‘Slow down, you big tub of lard. You’ll trip over a root.’ he spotted a yellow flower on the grass. Its unusually colored petals glowed despite the darkness, seemingly reflecting the faint twinkling of the stars above.

He smirked and bent to pick up the rare flower, examining it in his hand. He felt the smoothness of its petals, his fingers ghosting over it gently as he took in the sweet smell.

It seemed as though he handled it with utmost care as he tinkered with the extraordinary piece of nature, afraid of destroying it beauty.

Until he crushed it tight in his hand, its form folding and crumbling cruelly in his fist.

He smiled. ♦
