It was the girls who first brought me into being, Abby and Alice. It was a perfect winter day to be born. As the instinctual surge of protectiveness rose up in me, I knew immediately what I'd been created for. I watched over them all that season, the Norrington six. The children played around me, their laughter a soothing balm. At night the candlelight glowed from the windows of the warm little house while I kept the dangers of cold and twilight at bay. Alas, the season changed, the weather warmed and I felt myself fade as another rose to take my post.
It was the eldest boy, Asher, who called me forth next. Pleased as I was to see what a fine man he'd grown into, I was saddened by the time passing. He needed me less but still I stood my post watching as he attending classes, courted his love and navigated the transition from child to adulthood. The others took no notice of me but I felt their trials, triumphs, heartaches and elation. When called away once more, I knew my time with the Norrington six had ended and my heart was heavy as I bid them adieu.
Surprised was I to be born again at the hands of one who while not of the original set, still bore the name. The offspring of my beloved Norringtons; Barry, Bobby and Bee, possessed the same tenderness of spirit as their predecessors. They recalled the promise of many winters to come. I knew then that while my charges may grow, age, and change, my role would not. When the cold winds came from the North a child of the Norrington line would call me forth and I would come. For always.
