One Well Pleased
Ettie had a tendency to nibble on things when she was preoccupied: pencils, a thumbnail, mint leaves, her bottom lip. Any attempts to break her of this uncouth habit had been abandoned long ago. Barry couldn't remember having ever been so aware of her oral fixation. But since returning home from Simdon, he found himself forever distracted by her mouth. No one ever seemed to notice his attentiveness, Ettie least of all, so there was nothing to keep his eyes from continually returning to the pink of his companion's full lips.
Said lips were now pouting in consternation. “Barry, are you certain this translation is correct? Not that I don't trust you but it doesn't sound quite right to me.”
Tearing his eyes away, Barry was forced to look down at he and Ettie's classwork. They were both studying for their Sterlington College entrance exams. While Barry had benefited from a tutor while in Simdon and his own natural aptitude at school work, Ettie had only her determination and drive to get her through the requirements needed for higher education. Unlike her friend, she had been studying Latin for just a semester and the translations still escaped her.
“Of course it doesn't sound right.” Barry smirked at her slanted handwriting. “You've translated 'a bene placito' as 'from one well pleased'. Once again, you're being too literal.”
“What's your translation?”
“At one's pleasure.”
Dark red eyebrows knitted close together as Ettie bent over her work. “Of course. I should have realized that.”
“You've done well with the others and you needn't worry at all about your arithmetic.”
Ettie smiled at the compliment and Barry felt an unaccountable rush of pleasure. In minutes they had returned to their previous composition of Ettie scowling at her book and nibbling on her finger while Barry gazed on, his own work ignored.
From the doorway of the study, Barrington watched his son knowingly. “Studying, indeed.” he murmured quietly.
