Chapter 1 - He is Youngwoong

I’m tired of failing.

I’m tired of being deserted.

And above anything

I’m tired of trying so hard and got nothing in the end.

***

A man clad in a brown coat walked out from a convenient store holding a plastic of foods. He walks swiftly between the crowds as if he wants to get quickly into his apartment, hid himself, and spending the day off inside it.

And that’s exactly his plan.

He walked quickly while tightened his scarf around his neck and face.

It’s rather easy today.

However, he stopped on his tracks when he saw people gathered outside an electronic shop, crowding to watch a big television playing an interview with a famous singer, Youngwoong. He decided to watch the interview with the others, seeing why people so interested with this man.

Perhaps, people get attracted to see this show because it’s Youngwoong, the famous singer whose songs and albums always ranked on top after its release.

Why is this Youngwoong so popular anyway? That man asked silently as he watched the interview. He once again tightened his scarf around his face.

Perhaps because he just has a really beautiful voice and a beautiful face too.

Perhaps because he just release another successful album, his fourth album which contain yet again sad and melancholy songs.

Perhaps because his name is Youngwoong, and that’s it no family names what so ever.

Perhaps because of his mysterious personality and background.

Perhaps because he had this strange cold aura around him that somehow attracts people around him however, they can only see and admire him.

Those are people’s answers, and it’s real, because he just read it in a magazine. Well, too many perhaps run around that man’s head right now, while the real reasons didn’t matter to him anyway.

Without anyone realizing it, Youngwoong scoot away from the crowd and continue his way home.

***

Youngwoong stirred from his slumber.

He cracked his eye and realized that his cell phone is ringing. He took it and saw the caller ID. Junsu~

What a pain… He thought as he flipped his phone and talk to his manager, “What do you want, Jun?”

“Are you still asleep? Geez I can’t believe it, its 11.00 am!”

“And I thought you are my manager not my dad?”

“No, but I am your hyung. You usually wake early, so don’t change that habit of yours! Or I’m the one in trouble once you had to follow your packed schedule again,”

“We’re the same age, you are not my hyung. And I thought I’m the most independent artist your company had so far?”

“Yeah… that’s right, but- my point is wake up sleepyhead; at least do something rather than sleep the day away,”

“And I thought this week is my holiday?” Youngwoong continue in a monotone voice, he just realized he had fallen asleep in his couch after watching DVD’s last night.

“Exactly, this is your rare holiday, so use it wisely!”

“I already am,”

“No, you had not. For God sake, Jaejoong!” his manager cried desperately from the other line, using Youngwoong’s real name in his frustration, “No singer decided to take 10 days off after a month he released his new album! No one had done that crazy thing, except you!”

“Exactly, and no company or manager let their artist done that right?”

Once again, Jaejoong can hear a desperate cry, weeping about his fate to manage a crazy boy and why the bosses just followed his every request, including the holiday Jaejoong asked. After that he starts blaming Jaejoong’s popularity and curse himself for it, because it’s a great thing that Jaejoong can be popular. Jaejoong simply shook his head at his manager antics. His manager is the one who needs to be managed actually.

“Okay, Jun. So why are you calling me?” Jaejoong asked as he walked to the kitchen to make a breakfast, or an early lunch.

“Oh yeah, I received it again this year, Jae,” His manager sound so serious this time.

“Receive what?” Jaejoong didn’t like the tone Junsu used.

“The letter,”

Jaejoong can feel his inside churned at the mention of “the letter”, a constant remembrance of his past that he tried so hard to forget.

***

Youngwoong heads to the office, the main building of Florete Entertainment.

“No one should come to the office when it’s their day off," he mumbled to himself.

And why the heck Junsu wants to give him the letter? He can just dispose it right away, just like how the other 5 letters. Further, he can come to his apartment if his intention really just to hand him the letter.

Jaejoong huffed as his cell phone ringing once again.

Junsu~

“Yeah, Jun,”

“Are you here yet?”

“Yes, I’m waiting for the elevator right now,”

“Ok, head to the 11th floor right away,”

“What, 11th?” However, no one answered his question as Junsu already hang up.

Why is he in the boss’ quarter?

***

Jaejoong watch how blue the sky and how that cloud looks just like cotton candy…

“Jaejoong, do you hear what I’m saying?” Lee Yong Woon asked him in a stern voice.

Oh right, he’s still inside the office.

“Uhmm, sorry, uncle, what are you saying?” Jaejoong asked again. Why Junsu should involve Yong Woon in this matter? Jaejoong thought as he glares at Junsu, who sit on the sofa. Junsu, on the other hand continue to stare at the magazine he had been holding.

Yong Woon, the owner of Florete Entertainment, sighed and massaged his temple a little.

“Jaejoong how old are you now?”

“Eh, 28.” Jaejoong answered, confused as to where this conversation leads to.

“Right, you’re an adult for quite a long time now.”

Yong Woon stands up from behind his desk.

“I think this is the right time for you to face your problem. You’re an adult, no adult hides or run from his problem, Jaejoong,”

“What do you mean, uncle?”

“I mean, this,” he take an envelope from his desk, “It’s about time you open this and face it,”

“I’m happy with life right now, uncle,” Jaejoong said stiffly, he eyed the envelope with hate.

“How can you be happy Jaejoong? How can you? You’re hiding from everyone all this time. You’re hiding behind that mask, behind the name Youngwoong that I had created for you,” Yong Woon nearly shouted.

Junsu looked at them both with worry in his eyes. He never heard Yong Woon raised his voice, especially to Jaejoong. That man love and treat Jaejoong like his own son.

However, this is not usually, this is about Jaejoong’s past, that only Yong Woon and he knew.

“This is also my mistake; I help you in a wrong way. I shouldn’t let you run away from it; I shouldn’t created Youngwoong for you. I shouldn’t created another you, and protect your past from the media. This is just an easy way out for you.”

“Then what?” Jaejoong asked. “What do you want now?”

“Do you want to throw me away too? Is that why you force me to go back again?” Jaejoong stands up and face that man, the man that had protected him for all this time, but now…

“You know that’s not what I meant, Jaejoong,” Yong Woon said with sadness so clear from his voice. “But you have to move on with your life without having your past clouding your step,”

“I already am, uncle,”

“No you haven’t. Tell me, when is the last time you smiled for real?”

Jaejoong thinks hard, however he can’t seem to answer it.

“You can’t move on with your life, if you don’t want to accept your past.”

Jaejoong can feel his vision getting blurry. But, I’m not ready, uncle.

Those words remain unspoken.

***

It’s the day.

Jaejoong had packed his things for his journey. Junsu had helped him and prepared clothes for 2-3 days, while inside Jaejoong wish it will just ends up so bad that he just had to return tonight.

“Okay then, I’m off, Jun,” Jaejoong said as he head to his car.

“Jae,”

“Hm?”

“Whatever happened, just know that you still had us with you,”

Jaejoong smiled faintly before getting inside his car and drive away.

***

As Junsu watched the car disappeared from their sight, Lee Yong Woon came out from the corner of the parking lot.

“I still don’t think this is the right time for him.”

“Then when? More then 10 years had passed and he still can’t-”

“But letting him face them alone. That’s just too much! Further, this can affect Youngwoong’s reputation,”

“I can handle that if he stills want to be a singer, after this,” Yong Woon gives Junsu assurance.

***

Jaejoong drive his car in silence, as he heads back home. No, not home. It is just a house, a building he once called home.

A place where no one accepted him as he is.

You are a failure, Jaejoong!

How can you be my son?

I shouldn’t bear a child like you!

Jaejoong wince as he remembers those words thrown at him as a kid.
