Summary: I wrote a kidfic last year called The Luckiest about the lives of Jared and Jensen in the future with their adopted kids, Emma and Brady. I wanted to write a sequel to that, but instead ended up with more of a timestamp. I don’t think you need to have read the former to get this one, just know that Jared and Jensen are married and have two kids.

Once upon a time, Jared used to love promo tours. Well, love may be a little strong a word, but it was definitely something he found enjoyable. Travelling the world, visiting countries like England, Germany, France, Italy, Australia and experiencing different cultures, customs and foods. And he always liked it best when Jensen would be there by his side at conventions all over the globe, meeting their fans.

He is due to leave LAX at 11pm at night, alone, to promote the new Disney Pixar movie he has a voice in. Part of him is excited, because although he’s been to Australia a few times, he’s never seen Japan or New Zealand. The excitement fades a little when he says goodbye to a solemn Emma and Brady after dinner, promising to buy them a stuffed koala and crocodile and telling them how much fun they’re going to have with Grandma Ackles while he’s away.

It dims even further standing outside security at LAX.

“So you’ll call -“

“The second I get to Tokyo,” Jared tells his husband, grabbing Jensen’s left hand and thumbing over his wedding band.

“And you’ll buy some water -“

“As soon as I get through security. And I’ll do all of the DVT prevention exercises on the plane, I promise,” Jared tries to reassure him.

“I don’t like that you’re going for three weeks,” Jensen says solemnly, not meeting his eyes.

“I’m going to miss you too,” Jared nods, responding to what Jensen’s not saying. “But I should go through security, and you should get home before your mother feeds the kids so much ice cream they won’t be able to sleep.”

Jensen smirks. “She knows her comfort foods.”

“I’ve hidden an extra tub of Rocky Road in the deep freeze in case you need it.”

“Because I’m going to be so distraught without you.” Jensen scoffs.

“You’re going to cry into your pillow every night.” Jared grins before turning serious. “This used to be fun, you know?”

“You’ll still have fun. You’ve always wanted to see Japan.” Jensen reminds him.

“Not as much fun as I would if you and the kids were coming with me.”

“Jared -“

“I know it’s not possible right now. But you’re my family, you know?” Jared gives Jensen a small smile then glances at his watch. “And I really have to go.”

Jensen reaches out to pull him in for a hug and discreetly kisses his ear. “You have to be so safe.”

“You too.”

“And you have to call every day.”

“You know I will,” Jared tells him as he pulls away.

“Oh, screw this,” Jensen exclaims, and pulls Jared in for a deep kiss, taking him by surprise. It’s not that Jensen isn’t usually affectionate, he just doesn’t like PDA’s as a rule. Then again, the last time they have been apart this long was before Emma was born ten years ago.

They pull apart, breathing hotly into each other’s face. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.” Jensen breathes. “Now go before you miss your flight.”

Jared gives him one more dry kiss before heading up the stairs to security. When he’s at the top, he turns and waves goodbye.

Suddenly, he’s not excited at all.

Japan is a complete culture shock and Jared spends half his week there jetlagged and the other in a happy fog of confusion. He spends countless hours sitting in interviews for magazines and television with Anne Hathaway to promote their movie. Their hosts are great, and Jared even manages to convince them to let him climb half of Mount Fuji on the one day there is nothing scheduled. The skies are clear and the view is breathtaking. Jared wishes he had his husband by his side to share it with.

Skype saves Jared’s life, and he gets to speak to Jensen pretty much every night as well as the kids if they’re not in bed. He didn’t think it would be possible to miss their little faces so much, but there you go.

“You look beat, man,” Jared tells Jensen on a sunny but cold afternoon in Auckland. It’s late at night for Jensen.

“Yeah, well, I had to take the kids into work with me today,” Jensen says tiredly.

“What? Why? I thought your Mom was staying until next week?”

“She was supposed to but her neighbor passed away yesterday so she had to head home.”

“Oh, crap.”

“Yeah, it was a bit of a shock - heart attack. She wanted to get back to help out his wife.”

“That’s fair enough. How did the kids handle the office?”

“You know Em, set her up on the internet and she was fine for the day. Brady though - “ Jensen trails off. Jared nods in understanding. Ever since Brady hit elementary school he’s needed extra stimulation. “He interrupted at least ten times because he was bored or because he couldn’t get past a level on one of his crappy DS games.”

“Do you need me to come back? There’s only a week more to go,” Jared offers.

“No, don’t be stupid, it was good enough of them to not make you do Europe. Meggie can take them the next two days, and Kenz is back in LA next week and she can help out then.” Jensen huffs out a breath. “They’re good kids, Jared. They miss you, but they’re not acting up. Brady even calmed down a bit after Lisa took them for a tour of the backlot.”

“I know they’re good kids. It’s just, I know how busy your work has been. How are the re-writes going?”

“We’re hoping to have something new to film by Friday, but I’m not holding my breath. Anyway, man, I’ve got to get to bed. I’m dropping the kids off before my 8am meeting tomorrow. Safe travels to Sydney, okay?”

“I’ll do my best. I’ll text you when I land.”

“Make sure you do. Love you, Jay. Come home soon.”

“I’ll be there before you know it.”

July 19 looms around before he knows it, and Jared spends his birthday in a dreary looking Melbourne. The kids call him to wish him a happy birthday before he gets up to do the rounds of morning television and Jared misses them fiercely. He misses Brady diving in between him and Jensen when he’s awake before them. He misses Emma sitting at the breakfast bar while Jared’s cooking, telling him about her day. He misses holding Jensen at night, misses sitting on the couch with him and a beer and spending time together when the kids are in bed.

The fact that it’s his birthday and he should be with his family having breakfast at IHOP only makes the feeling more acute.

Anne and her husband take him out for lunch after they finish their television commitments. They’ve been travelling together for three weeks now and have become good friends. He enjoys the food, the glass of wine and the company, but his heart pangs for his family. He reminds himself that it’s just one more premiere red carpet, then three media interviews tomorrow, and he’s done. He’ll be back on a plane to LA tomorrow at midnight.

Disney has chosen South Yarra’s Jam Factory for the big Australian premiere. The hype around the movie means there are entertainment reporters lining the carpet and all of them want to speak to Jared. He isn’t as famous as Anne, but his HBO cop drama was a cult hit, and even though he finished up on that two years ago, there’s still interest in him from that role.

“Jared, you’re probably most famous for your roles in Supernatural and Street, both of which were quite gritty. Why this role, voicing a character in a Disney Pixar?” a reporter asks.

“Honestly,” Jared starts, voice rising over the noise as competition winners run past him on their way into the cinema. “I wanted to do something my kids could actually watch.”

“Did they enjoy it?”

“They haven’t seen it yet,” Jared informs her. “I had to fly out a few days after it premiered in the States, so I’ve made their Papa promise not to take them until I get back.”

He continues walking up the red carpet, talking to reporters and answering their questions. There are so many kids heading into the cinema that Jared has to intentionally block out when anyone calls out ‘Dad’, a name he’s used to responding to. So he’s not surprised that he misses his own kids shouting that out until he has a six year old boy wrapped around his leg and a ten year old girl around his waist in the middle of answering a question.

“What? Brady? Emma? What are you guys doing here?” Jared squats down so that he’s eye level with his children before letting out an overjoyed noise at seeing them. He holds them tight, one arm around each.

“It’s your birthday, we had to come,” Emma tells him shyly and resting her head on his shoulder, wary of all the people around them.

“And Papa said that if we’re good, we can go and see where Nemo lives later,” Brady adds.

Jared looks behind them and tries to spot his husband. “Where is Papa?”

“He said he’d meet us in the cinema,” Emma informs him. “We wanted to see you now.”

Jared stands up and grips his kid’s hands as he turns back to the reporter. “Sorry about that, I was just given the best birthday present ever.”

“Are these your children?” she asks brightly.

“Yeah, this is Emma and Brady. They’ve come to Australia to surprise me.” Jared’s so excited he can barely contain his glee. He wants to hurry all of this up so he can see his husband.

Jared’s PA sweeps in a few minutes later to take Emma and Brady to their seats in the cinema. They know her, but both are reluctant to let go of their Dad and have to be bribed with popcorn and merchandise.

He spots Jensen just outside the theater and with a wide grin nudges him into a dark corner and embraces him.

“Jensen, what the fuck?” Jared asks, large hands cradling his husband’s strong jaw, Jared’s smile giving away that he’s pleased with the way the evening has panned out.

“Emma asked me why we weren’t going to be in Australia with you for your birthday. I didn’t really have a reason to tell her why not. Besides, we missed you.”

“You’re the best,” Jared tells him, leaning in and kissing him like he hasn’t in three weeks. He tastes faintly of toothpaste and coffee and Jared hadn’t realized how much he missed it until this moment. “What about your show?”

“They can cope without me for a week.” Jensen dismisses, grabbing Jared’s hand again and running his lips over the knuckles. “I know you were keen to go home, but how do you feel about staying another few days? I promised the kids we could find Nemo up on the Great Barrier Reef.”

Someone clears their throat and informs Jared that the movie is about to start. They quickly walk into the cinema and take their seats with Emma and Brady in between them. Jared keeps looking towards Jensen and catching his gaze, smiling, like he still can’t believe they’re here. He drapes his arm across the back of Brady’s chair, and Jensen does the same over Emma’s so that their fingers can touch.

The movie is well received. Brady gets tired halfway through and crawls into Jared’s lap, but Emma is thoroughly entertained and laughs at all the right bits, so he figures he’s onto a winner.

He knows he’s onto a winner later that night, tucking his children into bed before unwrapping his Jensen-sized present to celebrate his birthday the old fashioned way.

“You’re not too tired?” Jared asks as Jensen sucks kisses into his neck. “I know what you’re like with jetlag.”

“I took a nap this afternoon and had about six coffees. I couldn’t sleep right now if I tried.”

“I could probably help you with that,” Jared tells him, rolling the two of them over so that he’s on top.

“I’m counting on it.” Jensen rolls his hips and gets a groan out of Jared. “Three weeks is too fucking long.”

Being quiet is something they’ve had to get used to, having two kids down the hall, and it comes into practice here with them in the bedroom just next door. But it’s been three weeks and it’s intense and Jared gets a headache trying to hold it in.

“How asleep are the kids?” Jared pants as his hips snap, rubbing Jensen in just the right way.

“Fuck,” Jensen moans. “They both slept on the plane and didn’t want to nap earlier so they should be pretty out of it.”

“Good, because I don’t know how much longer I can go slow and quiet.”

“We’ve got to scar them for life somehow, right?” Jensen smirks and wraps his legs around Jared tighter. “Come on, birthday boy. Fuck me like we’re twenty.”

“We never fucked when we were twenty.”

“Then fuck me like we used to when we wanted to freak out Chris.”

Jared laughs and decides it’s probably safe enough to let go a little. He feels like it takes next to no time to get there, what with it being more than three weeks since the last time he and Jensen have slept together. Not to mention that his husband looks incredibly hot lying naked against the black cotton sheets.

Thankfully, Emma and Brady aren’t woken by the occasional squeak of bed springs or muffled moans.

“Kids still asleep?” Jensen asks after, as Jared returns from the bathroom.

Jared nods. “Thank God. That could have been a very awkward conversation in the morning.”

He kicks off his boxers and crawls under the sheets next to a sleepy Jensen. Jared curls around him and places a hand on his heart, dropping a soft kiss onto his shoulder.

“Think you can sleep now?”

“I think you’ve worn me out enough,” Jensen grins, bringing his hand up to intertwine with Jared’s on his chest.

“Thank you,” Jared says softly. “It didn’t feel like my birthday until you guys got here.”

“So it was a good surprise?”

“The best surprise,” Jared reiterates as he leans across to give his husband a kiss.

As they fall asleep wrapped around each other, Jared thinks that he could handle more promo tours if all of them ended like this.
