Into the Dark Night
Chapter 7

Jaejoong honestly thought it wouldn’t be this easy. He’d prepared himself for heavy security-padlocks, cameras, eye-scanning devices, the works. He steeled his nerves before creeping into the dark halls of the reserve with footsteps so quiet only those of his kind could manage. But after a few uneventful turns at corners where he thought he’d have to fight with a throng of armed guards, unguarded cameras, and easily inactivated laser mazes, Jaejoong got tired of holding his breath and just breezed through the place.

Albeit a bit suspicious as to where all the guards were if not guarding the King’s stash of Lumici, he prodded on determined to achieve what he set out for. It had not been an easy task getting into the reserve; it was troublesome just locating it.

Fortunately, his encounter with Kyuhyun and Sungmin helped him get here quicker than planned. They bickered in between giving directions, but hey, who was he to complain?

He still had no idea where Heechul was, but at least he knew Donghae was in safe hands-with this, Jaejoong could breathe a bit easier.

He passed several identical doors, not sparing a single glance at security cameras (he’d disabled them earlier on as well), when he reached a ward that contained rows and rows of small beds behind a thick clear glass. There was a table on his left that sparkled with every kind of surgical tool he could recognize.

The place eerily resembled those nurseries in hospitals where newborn babies were placed, and when Jaejoong thought of the irony of it all, he gathered his fingers into a trembling fist. He resisted the urge to punch a hole through the damn glass and get every single baby out of there. He could only imagine the kinds of testing and experiments they do to them, his kind-his family.

With one last look and a whispered promise to return, he drew a shaky breath and continued his search.

The halls were dark and eerie, but somewhere in the maze, Jaejoong could hear soft muffled sobs. He went toward the sound, only to be led to a door tucked away in a corner. He hoped he’d finally found him.

He twisted the knob, and opened the door to find someone he least expected.

“Ryeowook?”

After several minutes of patting and consoling silent pleas of ‘I’m scared, it hurts, take me away from here’, Ryeowook finally found the strength to pull away from Jaejoong’s embrace and look him in the eyes without breaking down.

“Hyung…”

“Ryeowook,” the older spoke up, “what happened? How did you get here? I thought you were…I thought you all were…”

“W-we escaped, hyung. Thanks to Minho, we were able to get out b-before the mundane troops...” he trailed off.

Jaejoong felt as if a whole world’s burden was lifted off his shoulders. They’re alive. Everyone is alive.

He enveloped Ryeowook in a bone-crushing hug, as if to reassure himself that the younger Lumiciant was really there. He felt tears prickle the corners of his eyes.

“But…not all of us…”

Jaejoong listened with wide eyes as Ryeowook explained how their small group was able to sneak out during the attack and how they were now hiding deep in the city, where the humans would least think of looking for them. But he was caught one day while trying to stock up on food, experimented on for God knows how much.

He took a moment to absorb all that the younger was telling him. He hadn’t even the strength to ask the boy who were able to escape; afraid of not hearing names he wished to hear. But there was a certain person’s safety he must guarantee, as both his friend and his duty as a Lumiciant.

“Ryeowook, what happened to Leeteuk?” He looked at him gravely, “where is our Solis?”

At this, Ryeowook burst into tears once more.

“We don’t know, hyung!” He tried to calm himself, but his hands continued to tremble, “w-when we got to his room, he was gone! We checked everywhere! They stole him, hyung! They stole him!” he sobbed loudly.

Jaejoong sighed and massaged his temples.

“We’re terrible! We escaped but we weren’t even able to s-save our Solis!” Ryeowook wailed. “I’m so sorry, Leeteuk hyung! I’m so sorry I couldn’t protect you!” His cries echoed loudly in the small room.

Wait, echo?

“Ryeowook, where are all the guards? Why is it so quiet today?”

“H-huh?” The boy gingerly wiped his eyes, “I don’t know, we’re usually very guarded…”

Now, this was strange. Jaejoong was positive that Youngwoon would never leave his precious stash of Lumici unprotected. Something’s not right.

“Regardless, we need to get you out of here while we still can.” He faced his back toward Ryeowook so that he could ride it.

“Hyung-“

“Don’t complain. You’re weak and we must move fast.”

With a pout, he climbed on and Jaejoong sped out of the room, “Ryeowook, have you tried looking for him here in the reserve?”

“N-no, I was always locked up…”

With a determined nod, Jaejoong was about to run faster but abruptly stopped as he heard footsteps and voices come their way. He quickly let Ryeowook down and went in the nearest door, cursing as their skin glowed faintly in the dark.

“What’s wrong, hyung? I thought I heard voices.”

“Ssh!” Jaejoong clamped a hand over Ryewook’s mouth and watched the humans through a creak in the door.

“You do know that we’re going to be in so much trouble.”

“Quit being such a sour puss, Junhyung.”

“I’m not being a sour puss, I’m just stating facts. Besides, I won’t be the one slaughtered by Hangeng hyung. He clearly told you to stay home.”

“And waste this opportunity? The reserve is practically empty!”

“Because you lied to them.”

“I didn’t lie, I was simply relaying information. Lord Youngwoon did say he wanted everyone in search for that kid. Surely, the guards here shouldn’t feel left out.”

Kid? Jaejoong eyebrows furrowed, Does he mean Donghae?

“Yunho, you’re hopeless.”

“And you’re a jackass. Now c’mon, this place creeps me out.”

“Not as much as that weird scientist. Not asking directions from him again.”

They heard an amused but almost pained chuckle. “Yesung has his own special charm.”

Ryeowook unintentionally squeaked at the mention of the name, having met the odd scientist more than once, but was unfortunately too late in clamping his hands over his mouth. Jaejoong sent him a panicked look.

“Hey, did you hear that?”

“Hear what?”

Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.

“I thought I heard something from that door…”

Jaejoong held his breath as the footsteps got nearer and nearer.

Yunho swung the door open.

Neither of them could look away.

Shit.

Donghae had begun feeling strange after the really bad headache he had days ago. Needless to say, Kyuhyun and Sungmin were worried out of their wits. Sure, they were used to Donghae suddenly blanking out, but they had a hard time digesting the pain etched on his face and the cries of pain that escaped his lips. It seemed so wrong, so out of place on the innocent and beautiful boy.

Since then, random names would pop up in his mind. Faces he didn’t remember, voices he thought he’d heard before. But most of all, he’d feel a wrench of pain clawing at his heart every time, as if he should know something. It made him feel uneasy, and a bit guilty.

The headaches came every now and then as well, leaving Donghae breathless and empty.

At times like this, he makes an extra effort to sneak out and meet Hyukjae.

The redhead makes him feel better, and Donghae wished to see him every single day because he liked how his cheeks felt warm and the butterflies went to his stomach (he still hasn’t figured out how they got there, he was sure he put them in a cage). But Hyukjae seemed busy, so Donghae committed to seeing the redhead only once every 2-3 days.

Although sometimes, he’d follow him secretly because he just couldn’t help it.

He has yet to tell Kyuhyun and Sungmin about Hyukjae, of course. He knew how protective they were, and he didn’t want to scare away his only friend. He’d tell them eventually, after practicing the lines in his head, because Hyukjae is special and Hyukjae is Hyukjae. Donghae smiled at that, seemingly satisfied with his reasoning.

He whistled happily (Kyuhyun taught him how) as he leaned his chin on his hands and waited by the red lamppost he decidedly named Minho. He thought he should at least put the names in his head to use. He and Hyukjae always met by Minho.

He lightly patted Minho and sighed as he remembered the last voice that echoed in his mind.

“Just stay in that room of yours and leave us alone.”

“We’ll get in trouble if they find him with us!”

He cringed slightly and felt the familiar pang in his chest. Donghae didn’t like what those voices keep saying. His lower lip trembled.

“Something wrong?”

Donghae’s eyes shot up.

“Hyukjae!” He flung his arms around the redhead’s neck and sighed in content against Hyukjae’s chest, inhaling his scent. “I’ve missed you~” he snuggled closer.

Hyukjae rolled his eyes but his lips stretched into a smile. He knew the Lumiciant had been following him yesterday afternoon, but didn’t mention it. He placed a hand on Donghae’s waist to prevent the boy from stumbling. At first, he was uncomfortable with how much Donghae liked to touch and cuddle. Then he realized that resistance was futile, since cuddling came as natural to him as breathing, plus he stuck like glue. He’d have to lie though, if he said he didn’t like it.

Hyukjae chuckled lightly, making Donghae squeal and hug him tighter. Normally, he didn’t get much feedback from the Rife.

But Hyukjae was in quite a good mood today.

“Too. Tight.” He managed to let out.

Donghae’s arms detached from Hyukjae’s neck in an instant, spreading them wide and above him as if to emphasize that he’d already let go. He leaned his head back to stare up at Hyukjae’s face, his body still pressed up against the taller man.

“Did I hurt you?”

Hyukjae smirked at the worried expression on the brunette’s face; placing two hands on his shoulders and gently pushing him away (because how his body pressed up against his own made him feel…uncomfortable). Donghae may have a killer hug, but he’s one hundred percent sure the brunette was about as harmless as a fly. Especially to Rife like him.

“Of course not.” He answered shortly.

Donghae grinned at that.

“Where shall we go today?”

“Oh! I’ve thought about it over and over, Hyukjae! There’s so many things I want to see! I read in a book once that there’s this place that’s like a puddle-only bigger! It’s ground all around but not in the middle. I forgot the name bu-”

“Lake.”

“Lake! I want to go see a lake! Then after that, we can try making animals out of paper! I saw it once on-“

Hyukjae almost remembered how to laugh.

“Alright, alright. Let’s go.”

- - -

Donghae dangled his feet over the cliff as he ate the puffy food Hyukjae bought for him. He heard the familiar pounding of boots on the grass and turned around to smile brightly at the redhead.

“Hyukjae! It really does melt in my mouth!”

“Hm.”

Despite the lack of response, the brunette beamed as Eunhyuk sat down beside him, their shoulders almost touching.

“Are you done talking with your friend?”

The redhead frowned, thinking of his boss. “He’s not really my friend…but yes. I’m done.”

“You took time to talk to him as soon as your phone made that ringing sound, Hyukjae. Surely, he must be your friend!”

He sighed. “Okay, fine. He’s my friend.” Out of all things, Eunhyuk refuses to talk with Donghae about his job. Most especially, his boss. After all, the man has been looking for Lumici for quite some time now. He may not know why, he just follows orders, but he has a bad feeling about his boss’ plans and he doesn’t want to risk Donghae getting caught. The thought of the brunette being locked up just…angers him.

Eunhyuk sighed again. What have I gotten myself into?

He wasn’t supposed to get attached to this kid, to anyone for that matter. He was here for his mission, and his mission alone. After accomplishing it, he was to disappear from this place, report back to headquarters, and await further instructions. This chain of events used to provide him comfort before, but now…

What was he planning to do?

Drag out his mission?

Bring Donghae with him?

Eunhyuk hadn’t thought that far ahead. He didn’t want to.

“One day…one day, I’ll meet him!” Donghae exclaimed.

“Meet who?”

“Your friend!”

“No!” Eunhyuk replied too quickly.

Donghae blinked at him, shocked at the sudden raise of his voice.

“I mean,” he cleared his throat, “you probably won’t get along.”

“Oh…” Donghae looked down at his hands, then looked back up at Hyukjae. “Don’t worry! I’m very good at making friends!”

I know you are, Eunhyuk thought sadly. You just choose the wrong person to be friends with. Why, of all people…

Donghae looked down at the buildings, frowning slightly at the rain. Yes, he liked how the drizzle and how it felt on his skin, but just this once, he hoped it would stop. He was with Hyukjae and the view would look so much more beautiful if…

“Hyukjae.”

“Hm?”

“How does the sky look like when it doesn’t rain?”

He tilted his head a bit, thinking it over. Donghae cracked a smile at how the simple gesture made the usually stoic and cool man look cute.

“I’m…not too sure about that. I saw it once, but I was very young.”'

“Oh…”

Eunhyuk sent him a sideway glance. “I hear it was quite a sight.”

“Really?” Donghae’s eyes brightened, “I bet it is! I wish I could see it! Just this once! Oooh, I wonder what color the sky would be~”

Eunhyuk leaned back on his hands, letting them support his weight as he watched Donghae gush-something he’s grown both accustomed and fond of.

“They say it’s blue.”

“Blue? Waah~ It must look so pretty!” He remembered the shade of Kyuhyun's apron. Blue, he liked that color. Donghae looked up at the gray and cloudy sky, his hood slipping off. He closed his eyes, feeling the raindrops fall against them. “I really wish I could see it…”

And then, for almost five seconds, the sky began to clear up. Hyukjae’s eyes widened as he felt the rain slowly stop and the clouds parted to reveal a bright blue. And then he could feel, almost feel the warmth on his skin-the sun.

He looked at Donghae, who still had his head tilted and his eyes closed. He almost looked as if he were concentrating.

“Hey, look-“

But as fast as it came, it disappeared. The thick clouds masked up the blue and what little he felt of the sun’s warmth was nowhere to be found. Simultaneously, Donghae fell slack. Hyukjae quickly caught him despite his shock.

“Donghae? Donghae!”

His breathing was shallow, but he felt warm. Hyukjae examined the brunette’s face, his fingers grazing over Donghae’s cheek. His eyes landed on the boy’s soft and dry hair. But it wasn’t brown.

“What the hell…?”

It was blonde. -- ♦
