Some news outlets have stressed that autism is not inherently connected to violence. That hasn't stopped others from hyping up fear. A TeaNN quack told Piers Morgan that peopel with ASDs "lack empathy." (Good discussion in thread, even if there are some douchebags.) Oh, and guess who else is scapegoating people with ASDs? Maggie Fucking Gallagher of homophobia fame.
I don't think you have to buy the "Autism is awesome!" line of thinking to be appalled and disgusted by this shit. As Rottenberg writes, demonizing of people with psychological and/or neurological conditions has ancient roots. Such people died en masse in the Holocaust. More recently, hate crimes against the disabled have been on the rise in the UK, in the wake of hostile rhetoric about how much they cost taxpayers:Michael Bailey, who lives in Northern Ireland and suffers from a muscle-wasting disease, said he had been tormented for seven years by local youths, abuse which continued despite contacting police 20 more than times.
He said he was called a "freak" and "coffin dodger", had his shed set on fire, had youths demanding money from him, and been pelted with missiles and spat at. He said he was afraid to go to the local shop.
