Today is the first day of NaNoWriMo 2007.
Of course, today actually began at midnight last night, but by then I had been in bed and been asleep at least an hour! I have been having problems sleeping lately, so when the Sandman came knocking by 10.30pm I was not going to refuse him!
This morning I had to take Troll down to Adelaide for her first induction day at her new High School for next year. There were talks by various teachers, quizzes for her to do and then uniforms to by. By the time we got home, had lunch and I finally got to sit at my pc it was 2pm! Fourteen whole hours of November without a single word written!
Well, I have made up for it since, clocking up a mammoth 6109 words by 1am tonight (this morning?). Not a bad effort at all for a first day!
Of course, troll was home this afternoon after the induction and seemed intent on ignoring the fact that I was at last trying to write. After the FOURTH interruption, I turned to her and quietly reminded her that it was now November and it was my time to write. This politeness was rewarded by a huffy reply on her part.
Well, they do say that one should start as one plans to continue, so I started! After sacrificing my Nano last year to the greater need of tygrr's immigration application and settling her into her new job, I was in NO mood to be self-sacrificing today! Troll and tygrr have both been given ample warning that I intend to be busy this November.
Therefore, troll was told in no uncertain terms what I thought of her huffing at me. I had uncomplainingly given her my entire morning for her purposes so the least she could do was support me in mine!
It's not like I intend to ignore my daughter for the entire month, but business hours monday to friday are MINE! Evenings and weekends I am available if required but if I can sneak some extra time in after tygrr goes to work and troll goes to bed I do!
So, the little matter of thoughtlessly demanding my attention having been settled I continued working well into the evening (to make up for lost time today).
I feel an amazing sense of satisfaction and relaxation now I am finally writing my story for this year. I have had it planned for a while then put it on the back burner while I did my spring cleaning and my muse has nearly killed me for it!
So tonight I expect to sleep well.... providing the two glasses of coke-a-cola I had earlier do not defeat me!
While revelling in finally writing my story I am likewise revelling in the spirit of competition that is happening in our local forums. There are about half a dozen of us who have word counts of between 4500 and 7000 words after the first day, so I expect tomorrow for it to be on for young and old! Thank goodness tygrr is working overtime tomorrow, as usually fridays are my days with her!
Can we say, 'Dragon in her element'?
Now though bed calls me.
