We were so impressed with our new kitty, now named Diva for how she swept into the house and charmed everyone - that we decided to get another one. And came home with TWO more!
The breeder had four to give away and my girlfriend who told me about them took the last one.
For those who aren't familiar with the Rex breed of cats, here's a little information:
"In 1959, a Miss Cox of Devonshire England found that a stray cat in her care had given birth to a rather odd looking curly-haired kitten, the sire thought to be a curly-haired tomcat seen in the area. Delighted with the kitten's elfin features and wavy curls, she named him Kirlee -- the founding father of the unique and wonderful breed of cats known today as the Devon Rex.
Today's Devon Rex maintain a look true to their founder -- huge ears, set low on the sides of the head frame, a pixie-like face with large, inquisitive eyes and a short slightly upturned nose. A coat of loose waves and curls covers a strong and supple body in a compact, refined form. These unusual features decorate a breed whose personality, intelligence, friendliness and inquisitive behavior are as unique as the package it comes in.
...the Devon coat varies greatly between individuals, ranging from an almost shaggy mop of loose curls in some to a thin suede-like coat in others that may leave some areas nearly bare. The coat may vary over the life of the cat, with some kittens dropping much of their coat ("molting") during their development, and some adult coats changing seasonally.
...The Devon personality has been aptly described as a cross between a cat, a monkey, and "Dennis the Menace." Devons are highly active, playful and involved with everything.
...Although little escapes a Devon's interest, Devons are very people-oriented. Most Devons invite themselves along for every activity -- preferably perched on a shoulder, lap, or wherever they can be closest to their people. They are accomplished food mooches, with "anything they aren't supposed to be into" only slightly less appealing than "anything you are eating." Many a bag of snack food left unattended for an eyeblink has suddenly sprouted two legs and a tail, with a Devon contentedly grazing inside.
...They are also active cats whose kitten-like antics last for their lifetime and who can be very inventive in their play."
So to say we have taken on quite a handful - or three handfulls actually - is quite the understatement!
Combine this with siamese and some playful moggies and you can begin to imagine our home at the moment.
So, here are the newcomers:
Troll's cat (as yet unnamed) - which I call piglette because of it's nearly bald body and patchy colours!
My little girl, a black and gold tortie, also as yet unnamed.
Troll's cat has the most amazing green eyes and very striking marking on her face. As sometimes happens with the breed she has very little hair at the moment.
My girl is a little more skittish than the others as yet, so she's doing some time in the bathroom before being let free to roam the house. She's very affectionate when I go in to see her and also very protective. Last night when I was sitting on the floor in there patting her every time we heard a noise in the hallway she would leap between myself and the door and growl, giving a very good impression of intending to protect me!
Oddly enough, she seems to intensely dislike having her photo taken, finally hissing at the camera to fully convey her displeasure! She's the only cat I've ever had that has been so adamant she doesn't want her photo taken.
I've been putting thought into a name for her. She's such a little warrior, so loving and is mainly a dark chocolate brown with only little whiffs of gold here or there. I've been trying to think of something African or Asian but as yet have had no success. Any suggestions?
Any suggestions too for a name for piglette (before piglette becomes her name!)?
In other news there has been quite the storm in a teacup
in the Nanowrimo forums in the last few days. I was in the middle of it. I queried something which others didn't seem to like being queried, or the manner in which I queried it. Their reaction is disappointing, as was the lack of reaction of others who could have spoken up in support of me, but then considering how some reacted when I spoke up it's no surprise that no one else wanted to risk copping that too.
It's taken a little of the shine off nano for me, but has reminded me of some very valuable lessons I learnt once about human nature. It has also reinforced my inclinations towards avoiding people as a general rule. Individuals are nice sometimes. In packs they are not.
I am glad though, that I did the work I did over the last year on my social phobia as this is just the type of thing that would have sent me plunging into depression for months in the past.
However, in the grand scheme of things this will have little impact on my life in ten years from now so I am sure I shall survive it.
In the meantime, there's nothing quite like new cats in the house to put things in perspective and calm dragonly inclinations to throw fireballs!
I can't help but wonder if they know how ugly they really are?
Tygrr's cat, now named Diva - yes, those ARE waves in her fur, not stripes!!
