There are two general schools of thought when it comes to organic modeling - the "Build-out" Method and Box Modeling. In Build-out, you start with a specific detail, say the area around the eyes, and work your way out. With Box Modeling, you start with a simple shape - often but not necessarily a box - and add detail to it, like a sculptor works with clay.

Each method has it's place and a good artist will choose the one that best fits their style and the needs of the project.

For the Real Ghostbusters characters, I'll primarily be using Box Modeling. First of all, the cartoon style is detailed enough to provide a challenge yet doesn't call for a realistic rendering. If I were replacing the cartoon character with their human counterparts, I would certainly be using Build-out.

Secondly, the schedule I've set for myself calls for speed and I'm more comfortable with Box Modeling.

I've decided to start with Egon, perhaps the most immediately recognizable to the Ghostbusters.
