I'm a bit confused here, are trying to come up with the ultimate compilation tape, or are you trying to create your own band, or is this just asking for suggestions for anything new and exciting that we've discovered, or maybe all of the above?
Suggestions for anything new and exciting, in an last-ditch attempt to not turn into one of those people who go "oh god pop music isn't as good as it used to be".
Have you listened to the radio latley? It's constantly playing bands trying to be the Human League. And I fucking hate the Human League (one band whose songs actually sound better at karaoke). Honestly, you've got Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, The Futureheads. The list of un-original clones goes on (as do I when I get on this topic
( ... )
Hmm, the problem i have with a lot of the clone bands is that the songs are actually pretty shit. I don't mind a copy that attempts to improve on the original, but simply copying the "sound" and "look" of a band without writing songs at least as good is a waste of wax/vinyl/plastic/bytes/whatever Ver Kids are using these days.
Exhibit A: Scissor Sisters. Elton John down to the vocal style and piano-y bits. However, no songs as good as Rocket Man, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road etc etc. (and if I Took My Mama Out All Night, she'd drink them, you, us and the members of Guns & Roses past and present under the table....)
