I've gotta German word (pronounciation assistance would be appreciated!) and an Irish Gaelic phrase....

I'm pretty partial to Póg mo thóin! (pronounced "pogue muh ho-in"). It means "Kiss My Ass!" (or Arse) in Irish Gaelic. :-D

Listen to the Munster, Ulster and Connacht versions being spoken HERE! (The Ulster dude means business!)

Also I have an ( Read more... )

So "schmushzisch" is the common pronunciation, eh? (My friend will feel vindicated.)

Thanks for the input! :-)

And on another note, are those Turkish evil eyes in your icon, or am I just seeing things that aren't there?

I wouldn't say your teacher is an idiot. I also learned "schmutZIG" in my German class. American's are generally taught Hoch Deutsch in high school, but its just like English. There are tons of accents and even dialects.

[For example, I - being hick - pronounce the word "fire" the same as "far". Most of America probably doesn't. :P]

Thanks for the "Hoch Deutsch" terminology. I only took two quarters + plus one continuing ed class in German, so I'm just an ittle baby when it comes to the language. ;-) (And I always want to get it mixed up with the two years of high school French I took, which is rather annoying.)

I don't *think* I say "fire" instead of "far," but I *do* say "hose pipe" and "fixin' to." heh But I think as far as accents go, most Southern US ones aren't bad ones to have. They are generally pleasing to the ear, IMO. :-D

Haha, yeah! Unless the twang is unbelievably overpowering, I think southern accents are friendly and... whatnot. That ol' come into my house for a nice cool glass o' lemonade type thing. [okay, something like that, anyway.]

You know, it seems like 90% of the time when people learn English anywhere but America, they learn it with a British accent. I always thought that was weird. I guess, technically speaking, British accent would be the original, I guess. :P
