Novice? At what, precisely?

On Saturday afternoon I was on my way home from William Marshall Tourney on the tram, reading my book. I was still wearing my sky blue dress with my gold and maroon sideless surcote. My hair was pulled back fairly modestly and I have removed my veil and headscarf. Two older Scottish men sat opposite me on the tram, one of whom leaned forward and asked "Are you a Novice?".

"No," said I with a smile, "I'm a medievalist!". He apologised and pointed to my book, which declares "CHRIST THE LORD" in large gold print below the http://www.biblical-art.com/artwork.asp?id_artwork=3829&showmode=Full.

Recently Sam bought me the new novel by Anne Rice called "Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana". It's the second book in her fictional, but 'scrupulously researched', account of Christ's life during the 'hidden years'; stories that are not told in the Gospels. The cover features detail from a painting depicting Christ as a grown man.  I started reading it during the week and have been enjoying it very much.

"Oh no," I explained, very amused, "it's a novel by Anne Rice. You know, the one who wrote all the vampire books".

I'm still chuckling to myself that anyone would mistake me for a nun!

I had a lovely afternoon at the tourney and found it very difficult to drag myself away at 5 o'clock.
The Celtic supporters' club dinner dance was...a unique experience. The company was wonderful, charming, the wit sparkling, at least to my immediate right and left. The meals were ample, although rather ordinary (beef/chicken/fish). The covers band was great, and played a wide range of songs very well indeed.

As for the rest of the event, well, it reminded me of all the worst moments of the weddings, 21sts and anniversaries I have attended over the years, with the drunken uncles (whose Scottish accents had become indecipherable), inappropriately dressed aunts, and the annoying table of young, drunken louts. In spite of all this I had some wonderful conversations on a vareity of subjects including linguistics (for the second time that day), politics, marriage & monogamy,  and Irish music. I'm glad I went, and made the effort to meet SammyHubby's friends. I wish SammyHubby had danced with me, and that he'd taken me home when I started to get bored at 10pm - instead we hung around til the band finished at midnight. But I'll know for next year.
Today we went out for breakfast and browsing on Glenferrie Road, then spent teh afternoon lazing around the house watchign DVDs. Our friend Danny (who arrived Friday) goes home tomorrow; we are lunching with Nic and Andy from NZ tomorrow; and hopefully will spend a few more minutes with Ailis & Bleddyn before they fly home Wed. Thurs and Fri ngihts I have Christmas parties to attend, and on Sat I plan to fall in a heap.
Life is good, if somewhat exhausting.
