a knife inside my back jean pocket

♠ Well, I just read Out Of The Ashes, which is the sequel to one of my favourite comfort reads, A Strong And Sudden Thaw. They're both by R.W. Day and they feature the rare creature that is canon boylove. It arrived in the post a couple of days ago, and having finished it this morning I feel the need to have a ramble about it. I read a couple of ( Read more... )

Yeah, it's the black and white thing that bugs me. I dislike the fact that they tend to think that because they're 'above' the muck and mire they can judge everybody who doesn't fit into black and white. I mean, the fact is that everyone makes mistakes, everyone has flaws, people do bad things sometimes, and on occasion you have to choose between a bad decision and a worse one. And then the Hero will get all uppity and indignant and act as if being human is the worst sort of betrayal ( ... )

Oh yeah, escape reading is good. I think we just escape read in different ways. You don't want the muck and mire, I need the muck and mire or the book will annoy me so much with its lack of realism that I won't be able to get properly involved in it. I don't hate the heroes, I just think they should sometimes ease up on the judging.

I see your point. I just sometimes like to think that you don't have to be bright as the sun and pure as snow to bring the world to a higher place. You should be able to be an imperfect person and still do amazing things. Like Felix Harrowgate. ♥ Oh Felix.

I'd like it edited out of the job description. Look at Dirk. Changed the world. Killed a god. Got his girl. And wasn't a bitch about it.

As I say, fair enough. Everyone escapes in their own ways. Sometimes I like the heroes, but mostly I like my imperfect not-quite-heroes.

I have no idea what this book is, but you make me want to go off and read it and the first book just because! (Okay I went to Amazon to look, and it had me until they mentioned dragons. That killed it for me.) Let me be more specific: that stupid dragon movie with Heath Ledger in it killed dragons for me for all time (apart from the Pern series, nothing can kill that).

Anyway... I like flawed characters. I think I shall go off and read Luck in the Shadows again! :)

Does it help that the dragons are genetically modified rather than magical? And that they are sort of secondary to the rest of the plot? The dragon thing is eventually explained and does make sense. And the boys are really lovely.

xD Luck in the Shadows. So good. My eyes do the anime love-heart thing whenever Seregil is mentioned. :p Have you read Doctrine of Labyrinths by Sarah Monette? Another favourite of mine when it comes to the flawed characters.
