Mrs. Carter clapped her hands together, redirecting the students' attention on her, "Okay before the bell rings, I like to pass out the short essays you did last week."
Nate closely looked at his teacher with a nervous tension building inside of him, "I hope she liked it."
"Like what?" Dan asked.
"My story, it took me all night to write it."
"What did you write about?"
"The time my grandfather taught me how to sail."
He receive his paper seconds after the comment. At least Carter didn't make it too difficult or Nate to notice what his grade was. In red marker, 69 % stayed at the top left corner of his paper so bright and bold that even a blind person could see it.
Dan gave a half convincing smile, "At least you passed."
"Yea, I know." Nate needed be relieved because this is the highest grade he has ever had on a written assignment however the feeling of disappointment was tugging at his heart strings.
Just then Carter got to Dan's desk, "Daniel that was a beautiful story. Keep up the good work."
They both exchange smiles and she walked back to her desk. Dan quickly shoved the paper into his bag before Nate could get a glance,"What did you get?"
"An A." Duh.
"What was it about?"
"H-Huh?"
"What was it about?"
"Uh...My paper? My paper, right. I-It was about-um that time I went to-to..what's that place called? Cal-Coney! Yes Coney Island!"
The bell rung and everyone in unison got out of there seats along with Dan. Nate's question was lost within the loud chattering of his peers and Dan disappeared.
It took a few minutes but Nate was able to catch up with Dan before he reach the bus stop, "Hey man do you want to get something eat?"
"Okay but where?"
"We can go to that sandwich place you like so much."
XXXXXXXXXXXX
Once they got there Dan suggested he'll go and wait in line to order while Nate waited outside for him.
"Can you watch my bag? I'm going to order the food."
"Sure."
While Dan was gone, Nate standing near a table with Dan's book bag in his hands. He patiently stood by watching cars drive and trying to ignore the voice in his head telling him to look at the paper inside Dan's bag.
'It's not like he's going to hate you forever.'
Well, it wouldn't hurt to give a little peek.
Supernova by Dan Humphrey
I know better, this feeling is familiar to me. I felt the same way when I met her in the great milky way among the others planets and galaxies circling around her in an endless waltz. My world stopped spinning, the voices cease, and everything remain frozen in time. That's when I knew I fell in love; maybe it was her golden kiss hair, her laugh, or her smile. Before my defense system could prepare, it was far too late. Suddenly a tidal wave of emotions embrace me, blinding me to think she was a goddess from another realm unknown to mine.
"Coney Island my ass." Nate huffed.
Similar to the seasons, love comes then leaves. Soon you are enjoying the bright sun cradling you in her warmth and you ignore the ominous clouds surrounding your only source of light. You don't think the sun will ever leave so you won't pay attention to that voice of doubt in your mind. Then before you know it, the cold wind is sending chills down your spine and you're alone in the meddling darkness wondering, 'Where did she go? Why is she hiding from me?'
You wait, wait, and wait some more until the end of time. You finally notice the sun has move to another location, leaving you to fight off the darkness that has enter your world.
So now you'll spend the rest of your time in that very spot telling yourself you were better off without her but you know that's a lie. You are nothing without her. Her presence gave you value unlike any treasure a man can own. Now that she's gone your value has decrease fully; your dimension is cold, spacious and empty. And you're back where you started-forever alone.
The truth is like a storm, it's obvious and unforgiving. Once the damage is finish you're lost in the infinite labyrinth of darkness and picking up the shatter remains of your heart.
I'll admit, I was lost without her. Although the sun is the main component of the universe, it's not in mine. It was a star that made me fall in love again. Although it was among the many other stars that console me in the abyss that I was lost in, that star was the most unusual. Even if the moon was present, that star illuminate the night sky with a fierce blue flame that was potent yet gentle.
Its presence gave me warmth during nights I thought I wasn't going to make it. When I realize the indescribable beauty the star behold; the weight of anguish, loneliness, and sadness that I've carried for so long lifted off my shoulders. The darkness dispersed and I could see again. The coldness that made my body stiff and my soul bitter was erase.
While other stars burst with a bright flame, crumble and die-my star will always remain. No matter what, it's always there. It knows no limits, has no boundaries. To others it's nothing more than a bundle of hydrogen and helium but to me it's existence is breathtaking. It's a supernova.
Dan came back with a brown paper bag in his hand, "Sorry for the long wait. Nate?"
"What?"
"What are you reading?"
Nate could lie but it was easier said than done. The paper that was super glued to his hand was left trembling in his fingerprints,"Is this story about Serena and me?"
"What are you talking about?" Dan looked beyond Nate's shoulders and saw the 105% paper that had the same style of cursive he has. He reach his hand out and snatch the paper away from him, "You don't start reading people stuff without permission!"
"It was a homework assignment, not your journal. And I did ask you about the paper but you lied and said it was about the time you went to Clooney Island."
"It's Coney Island! A-And..." He grabbed his bag and swung it over his shoulder, "I don't have time for this."
He crossed the street without even looking both direction, stomping his way between cars with Nate still following him.
"Is this story about me?"
"Stop acting barbaric, you're making a scene."
"Then answer my question then!"
"Go away."
"Amazing how you still haven't answer my question yet."
They reach the sidewalk, "Shut up!"
"Answer my question and I will."
Dan turned around, "For Pete's sake, yes! The story is about you." He added, "A-And Serena. Are you happy now?"
Nate lightly pecked Dan's lips, "Yes smart ass."
