Under the bright sun was where a place surrounded by luxurious green fields as far as the eye can see was present. It was amazing.
Actually it was a property owned by one of Nate's aunt for over three decades and only relatives of the Van der bilt have been lucky enough to see it. It's actually a ranch own by one of Anne's sister Elizabeth in the outskirts of her Connecticut home. 20 acres of rural land, with a horse stable where she keeps a few horses there; two chestnut Thoroughbred born and raised in England, one black and one gray Orlov Trotter and a brown Brandenburger that she brought from Germany. One of the Thoroughbreds competed and won the Kentucky Derby in 2003 which there wasn't a day Elizabeth didn't brag about.
Once they got there Nate gave Dan a tour around the place, "Did you come here a lot?" Dan asked Nate.
"When I was younger but since I live in New York, I didn't get to see this place often. I remember my aunt dragging me all the way out here at 4 a.m. in the morning so we could take care of her horses. And by 'we' I mean me doing all the cleaning and grooming while she's on the sidelines instructing me."
Dan couldn't help but laugh, "Sounds exciting."
"She said it's suppose to be a bonding experience that her and my grandfather participate in long ago, so I was to enjoy it. She made me do the most ridiculous things from cleaning the horses' teeth to removing dirt and poop from their hooves. I swear, I smelled like horse shit all day-no matter how many showers I took."
"So you brought me here to go down wonderful memory lane."
"Actually no," Nate smirked, "I remember you telling me you rode a horse before so I thought you might like this place."
Dan scratch the back of his neck, "Now you see-I may have exaggerated a bit when I said I rode a horse."
Nate's voice didn't sound convince, "Have you rode a real horse before?"
"He-heh...Does riding a donkey at a petting zoo when I was six count?"
"No."
"Then no."
"Well then, would you like to?"
He grinned, "Are you serious? Wouldn't your aunt be pissed if a commoner rode on one of her horses?"
"Who cares? And besides, she'll never know anyway."
Nate got all the equipment from a cabinet and set it up on one of the horses grazing at a bundle of hay Margaret.
"Alright we'll go through this step by step. First grab the horn with your right hand then put your right foot on this stirrup, pull yourself up and while you're doing that-toss your left leg to the other side of the saddle. And make sure once you settle, sit up straight."
It took about 45 minutes but Dan was able to finally get on the saddle. However as he look beyond the scenery, he notice something when Margaret shuffle her feet. The sound of his heart beating against his fragile rib cage echo into his eardrums. Then he started hyperventilating, "Yea-OOOkay this is way too high."
"It's feels weird at first but don't be a scary cat."
"What if I fall?!"
When Nate grabbed Dan's hand, "You won't, I'm right here."
"What happens next?"
With a incoherent clicking sound Nate produce, it signal the horse to start loping (a slow version of galloping).
After a few minutes of loping in a circle, Dan couldn't help but feel nostalgic and reverted back to that same little kid at the zoo.
"I told you it wouldn't be so bad."
"Alright alright. Anyway, how do I get down?"
It took another 45 minutes to get Dan off the saddle.
After they were finish, Nate put all the horses back into their box stall and return the riding equipment into the cabinet.
"Was it fun?"
"Even though I almost had a heart attack, it was fun. Thanks."
"No problem."
"So what now? You're not going to make me clean the stable like you used to."
"I wasn't even thinking that but that is a great idea."
"That's not funny."
Somehow Nate's hand creep over Dan's arm, "I have a better idea."
It was until Dan started to struggle under his boyfriend's weight that Nate broke off the kiss. With fingers unbuttoning Dan's shirt, "What's wrong?"
He licked his swollen lips, "I'm not saying this isn't nice and all but don't you think we've been gone for a long time. I don't want your mom going Emily Rose on me when we get back."
Nate smiled, "I wouldn't worry about that. She has a book club meeting so we're going be here for awhile."
