in which jean learns to ride the boltbus...

My, this is lovely. Air conditioned, confirmation number given, and connected a marked contrast to my last intercity hop. ( Riding the Chinatown bus from DC to Philly was painful, )

OMG! It sounds unreal, like it should be playing in a theatre near you! All the times I've taken the Chinatown buses, I've never had any of those problems. Too bad they are going downhill;-( Congratulations on finding peaceful transport!

And I do lay the blame at the bus company's feet, because for whatever reason, they were underprepared and underorganized (understaffed?) and overworking their people, while still claiming to meet demand. While being hopelessly unable to. At least mitigate the damage by either restructuring to meet demand in a reasonable way, or being honest and telling people where else to go, and/or give refunds rather than have everyone wait around for nothing.

Yeah the ticket-sellers/managers for the DC office were on their cell phones for quite a while scrounging for another bus. What they really need is a way of limiting the number of tickets they sell, but as yet they haven't put in the infrastructure for that. (ie. all the tickets come out of a generic and unlimited stack) There was another bus company around the corner that had a bus leaving at nine. In retrospect that might have been a better bet. At the moment though there's really no one but the chinatowns offering last minute, low cost, express buses. Bolt and Mega have fewer buses and you have to prebook them or pay about 25% more than chinatown.

glad to hear you got back to NYC safely and easily. Also, as a followup to your visit--today, I saw an adult tricycle. It had a huge basket between the two back wheels and was pretty impressive. I wish I had a camera. Also, in reference to your obsession with soy--did you know its scientific name is "Glycine max" (per wikipedia)? I thought it was pretty amusing. It was good to see you!

Nifty! Maybe I can ride one of those instead of the bajillion mta buses you have to take around the bronx here. Glycine! A versatile little amino acid-- it's small so it's cute and bends easily any which way. Yet another reason to love soy :P

Wow - that's crazy! I have had a bad Chinatown bus experience or two, but yours takes the (poisonous) cake. Sorry to hear it was so difficult.

Let's call it "a forced expansion of my transportation repertoire."
