That's fascinating! First thing I see in Wikipedia is that she's from Yorkshire! I should have guessed that, with the coal mine. *facepalm* Still, that's especially interesting she was "out" in what I think of as a more traditional area.

Haha! We did have coal in a great many places - not just Yorkshire (although don't mine at all any more...)

It is amazing that she was 'out' at all in those times - anywhere in the country. Both the drama and the documentary touched on the abuse she received for being so. Then we moved onto an article on the news about the current abuse of lesbians in South Africa, so times haven't really moved on.

Thank you for this info. I'd never heard of Anne Lister- what an interesting woman she sounds. Doing a little search, other names came up too. Lesbian or not, it underlines how many women have been under-reported or ignored by history.

And makes one wonder why there is still such a fuss made about things, when 'it was ever thus'. We humans waste so much energy over the years on things that are hurtful to our fellows, and really don't matter.

Three rousing cheers for Anne Lister!

She reminded me of the welsh lady you reported on last week in that there is so much history we don't know.

when 'it was ever thus'
Absolutely.
