2007 Yuletide Recs - Part 1

Dec 27, 2007 11:44

Last year I did two recommendation posts, but with the sheer bounty of this year's yuletide I suspect I'm going to have more on the order of three or four posts. This generally covers fics from fandoms beginning with the letters A-D but there's a few in there I haven't gotten to yet and I also felt like reading some Elizabeth fic last night...

Top Picks

A Man of Middling Morals (Robin Hood UK)
This is the story that was written for me. Even if it hadn't been, I'd be reccing it like mad. It's a wonderfully fun tale centering on Alan a Dale and Djaq and I grinned and giggled all the way through. So. Much. Fun.

Renaissance Portraits (1602)
Portraits of characters not originally included in 1602. I loved the first three (I won't tell you who because that might ruin it). The fouth felt a bit out of place, but was still very well written.

Something Less Than Ideal (Arthurian Legend)
A short but excellent piece from Galahad's POV.

Live to Tell (Burn Notice)
I don't know the first thing about this fandom, but something caught my eye in the summary and I read this fic. Fan-fucking-tastic. It's dark, but absolutely brilliantly written.

No Man's Land (Connie Willis - To Say Nothing of the Dog)
An excellent glimpse of the dangers of time travel from Verity's POV. Very enjoyable read.

No One Is Ever Told What Would Have Happened (CS Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia)
Short, beautiful and bittersweet.

Queen of Morning (CS Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia)
A beautiful story centering on Susan.

Before Once Upon a Time (CS Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia)
A look back at the White Witch, beautifully told.

The Time for Parting Come (Diana Wynne Jones - Chronicles of Chrestomanci)
An adorable, entirely in character short centered on Christopher and Millie. Too cute for words.

The Murder at Missel Hall (Diana Wynne Jones - Chronicles of Chrestomanci)
Fabulous.
A full-blown story of murder, mystery and magic, beautifully told. I have no idea why more readers aren't showering this author with deserved praise.

La Familia (Diana Wynne Jones - Chronicles of Chrestomanci)
An excellent, full-length story. Definitely worth the time investment.

Your Boy is Like a Memory (Diana Wynne Jones - Dalemark Quartet)
There's a sweetness to this that I really enjoyed.

Eyes of the Moor (Elizabeth)
Walsingham's perception of his Queen. Fabulous.

In the Matter of the Death of the Lady (Elizabeth)
Fanfic takes on the death of Amy Dudley. Absolutely fucking brilliant.

Other Fics I Greatly Enjoyed

The Last Rites of Wednesday Addams (Addams Family (movie))

The Twelfth Night Dinner (A Fragment) (Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes series)

The Kidnapped Instrument (Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes series)

The Affair of the Dutch Steamship Friesland (Arthur Conan Doyle - Sherlock Holmes series)

Evidence (Birds of Prey (comic))

Dollars for Sense (Burn Notice)

Oh My Beloved and Oh the Delight of My Eyes (CS Lewis - Chronicles of Narnia)

Prophets Don't Know Everything (The Dark Crystal)

No Good (Diana Wynne Jones - Chronicles of Chrestomanci)

Family (Diana Wynne Jones - Chronicles of Chrestomanci)

The Paths of the Undying (Diana Wynne Jones - Dalemark Quartet)

Allow for Inflation (Diana Wynne Jones - Dalemark Quartet)

Intended (Diana Wynne Jones - Magid Series)
