Miranda was mean. Cruel. She clearly had only read about the first 4 pages of my thesis, and that's it, because she grilled me with questions that I answered in subsequent chapters, and did it in such a way that it really paralyzed me. Caryl will be there, as were liz and laura for me, to help buffer that and help bail you out, but, dude, nobody prepared me for how fucking mean miranda would be, and it was just completely unjustified. I hate her for it.

This isn't as constructive as you want it to be, I'm sure. My brain is in no shape, but what would have helped me is just bracing myself ahead of time for whatever mj might throw at you. She is not nice.

Caryl was pretty chill. she asked me good questions - not super hard or anything. Eli's right - she's buffers and is totally on your side, like she pretty much asked me questions she thought i could talk about easily and would make me sound smart. Maybe you can contact her and talk to her about "what you can expect/what areas people might as you questions in" and you could maybe ask her about what might come from Miranda, you can also contact Miranda about this but I'm assuming you won't want to. But I totally talked to Kari and Caryl before my defense. She'll probably give you broad answers but it's still useful ( ... )

i thought miranda was pretty easy on me, but i think it's because 1) i'm shy and 2) i just flew in from ny to defend and everyone knew i was anxious to get it over with ... hopefully the latter will apply to you and it will just be another hoop to jump.
toward the end, miranda and marv just debated theory amongst themselves and i sat back watching the minute hand tick by until my requisite hour had passed and my dues were paid.

i dont know what miranda is like but just try to think like her for a seconds to prepare for what she may ask. dont worry about caryl.

as for an opening statement- i dont even remember making one. lol. my whole critique was about how i positioned myself as a powerl;ess woman in the writing cause i wasnt a writer (graf artist)

I didn't have either Miranda or Caryl on my committee, but I've heard that Miranda tends to not read the whole thesis or really engage with your argument, so her questions might require you to explain what you wrote. Caryl, I think, will be good. She will have read everything and engage with you in meaningful discussion about your work.

My opening statement was just about how I had come to the research and how I positioned myself theoretically.

Good luck!
