It's that time again!
As always, I apologize to the people on my flist who aren't on my fanfic filter and who don't care about this stuff, but this is one post that has to be left public. It shall be cut for your protection.
I'm afraid I'll once again be borrowing heavily from earlier years' letters, partially because I'm once again short on time but also because I'm a creature of habit. :)
First of all, thank you for the time you'll be putting in working on this, I really am looking forward to reading what you write for me. Like, lots. When writing my requests, I tried to give multiple options while still being clear in what I was looking for and not make things overly limiting, but that's a lot to balance in a relatively small number of words.
Here are a few things I tend to look for in a fic beyond what I asked for in my requests:
- Pairings: My preferences should have been fairly clear from the requests, but in general I prefer canon pairings. I like het better than slash, and I like gen best of all. It's not a squick, but a strong preference.
- Explicitness: While I like a good bit of smut as much as the next person, I'm really really particular about the smut I read. I'd prefer it if the story was kept below an 'R' rating just in general.
- Genre: While I'm usually a big fan of the angst, that's not necessarily what I'm looking for at yuletide. Introspective is good, serious is good, but emotional anguish is probably going a bit far.
- Perspective: I'm not a huge fan of first person perspective. If that's what works best for you, then go for it but it's really not my cup of tea.
- Holiday Trappings: If you're thinking of going in that direction I'd like to politely request that you not. I'm not a Christian, I don't celebrate Christmas and I'm not particularly interested in a Christmas-based story.
As for the fandoms themselves, here's a few additional things I thought of:
Generally: Because you can only select one rating level, I mostly left this blank. I If I could ask for two, I'd want either General Audiences or Teen and Up except for Baccano! which I bumped up to a Mature rating to accommodate the violence. (Gen/Teen is fine there, too. I just didn't want you to think I wasn't taking the inherent violence of the series into account.)
Request 1: Inkheart Trilogy (Teresa Folchart) - I know that technically my request could have come under the movie fandom, but the thing is I tend to think of Inkworld as almost another character in its own right. It's such a presence in the story and I was really hoping that would play in to any fic. Unless you do the Resa/Dustfinger story in which case, it really wouldn't. I'm pretty sure they can carry the story on their own, though.
Request 2: Saiyuki Gaiden Tenpou, Konzen) - I don't have a real clear idea of what I want for this one and had hoped to be able to expand somewhat here but am still drawing a blank. Please check back over the next day or so if you need guidance. I'll try to make sure I pull my thoughts together into something coherent Monday or Tuesday.
Request 3: Baccano! (Maiza Avaro) - I love history, particularly American history, which is why I'm so interested in Maiza's actions in the 18th and 19th centuries. I'm not against other characters showing up in the fic, but I didn't have anybody specific in mind.
Request 4: Justice League International (Ted Kord, Tora Olafsdotter) - I am an old school JLI/JLA fangirl. Unabashedly so. I would probably be happy with just about anything, especially if you can showcase the balance of lighthearted banter/action/underlying serious that the original series carried off so well.
What I love most about Ted Kord is that he's basically this average guy, smarter than most, more resources than most, but normal, who goes out and becomes a hero. And this normal guy holds his own alongside powerhouse characters with some serious abilities. And the entire time, he's got a good nature and sense of humor about it all. Putting him together with Booster (as best buddies, not boyfriends) and it's a winning combination all around.
As for Ice, I love that she has a quiet personality, but really can kick ass. I love her interactions with Bea and the way they balance each other and I ship her with Guy Gardner, hardcore. Just to warn you, I like Guy as a character and always have. I know that's not a hugely popular opinion, but he's always interested me, even when he's being a complete dick.
There's probably other things I could say or come up with, but those are the major things that come to mind right now so I'll leave the rest up to you! Have fun writing because I know I'll enjoy reading it, no matter what you choose to write. Oh, and if you're looking for indications of what kind of things I write or read, I store my fic at
msc_fic, and there are some stories I've enjoyed favorited in the memories section there. I have also got favorites on my ff.net page, though that stuff is all pretty old. (I still haven't quite gotten around to sorting through or making use of AO3 yet...)
Thank you yet again,
~MsC
