David Lebowitz (of Perfect Scoop fame) recommends this one in the pre-freeze category. If you have money to burn or plan to get into a serious obsession, this is his favorite of the self-freezing kind. I kind of covet one, but with a chest freezer, also have plenty of room to stash my canister, and it's probably for the best that I can't make infinite batches of ice cream one after the other :)
I don't know of one but Sharon's makes the most excellent coconut sorbet, which I am sorta eating now. I say sorta because I am not sure dribbling counts as eating.
We have this one. I think it does a great job, as long as you follow the directions (and they're not hard.) The modern ones, with the cannister that freezes, are less messy than the older ones that used ice and rock salt. That being said, I wish I had two cannisters, because it takes a long time (overnightish) for one to freeze solid, and in the summer, I'd really like to whip up a couple of flavors at once.
This one seems to be the one most often recommended. thanks! I don't think my household could go through enough sorbet to justify two canisters, but given my love for ice cream, if I break down and start making ice cream instead of sorbet (my current plan) we might be in trouble.

I really like it and have made ice cream, sorbet and gelato with it. If you have the stand mixer this is a spectacular attachment.

(really, we got it as an xmas present; I probably wouldn't have been able to bring myself to spend the money myself).
