That one was on AO3, and it's one of the newest. She really can write, but she can't write well enough to make me believe something that anti to what I think Katniss is like. I can see an AU where Katniss doesn't end up with Peeta, but I can't even remotely imagine an AU where she would do THAT.
Generally I like AO3 and the stuff available there--compared to The Pit it's a godsend--but some stuff just makes your eyes bleed anyway.
I've read fics like that. They can obviously write at a reasonably competent level, even if not fantastic. But they're forcing a vision of a character or situation that just is so unnatural a fit with the canon that it's like, "No."
Katniss in particular seems prone to that. I don't remember what fic it was where I collected my own recent What The Fic, but it was THG. I seem to remember another gem that had Haymitch crying a lot, which was facepalm worthy. Dude, you can make someone vulnerable or depressed without having them ugly-sobbing.
Which just really makes me write more of Haymitch and Johanna morning-after snarking at each other to clean the bad taste from my mind.
I think some people come in with an agenda to push and they foist it on the chars rather than letting the chars be themselves and tell their story in a natural way.
If the concept of your AU is making your characters act like they're brainwashed into not being themselves, I'm generally not interested.
