Generally, Badness Coming. I'm thinking a red "halo" (close to the head) means Angst For You, Dude! IOW, something is going to happen to somebody else that will cause you pain.

For instance, in the episode where John first contacts them, they're lying on beds with red bedspreads. And in "Crossroads Blues," the girl who gets devoured by hellhounds is in a room where almost everything is red. And the first thing we saw of Jessica was her shiny red shoes...
