Sadly, I just got the 'thanks, but no thanks' brush off email regarding the position I applied for at work.

I am disappointed, but what to do?  I am told over and over that I need experience.  I get that.  In fact, I want that.  How does one go about acquiring experience if no one will hire you to do the work?  I get some experience in my current ( Read more... )

The trick is "crossover" skills. For example: you may not have experience in graphic arts (i.e. marketing), but you do know scribal arts. That gives you colors, composition, layout, art history, fonts, and so on.

Another example, scribe_ari studied social anthropology in college. What does that qualify her to do? Surprisingly: database integration. She understands what it takes for different cultures to interact peacefully. Extending the concept, that applies to disparate databases as well. All one needs to do is understand the different "cultures" and what it takes to get them to interact correctly.
